Handicapped Accessibility Information

Am thinking of moving to villages and would appreciate some questions being answered?

I am wheelchair bound and am wondering if there are any carts modified to allow me to drive the cart from my wheelchair? If not, what can u suggest or what have u done to modify ur cart to meet this concern.

Are any of the resales in the Villages handicapped accessible with roll in showers?

Are there any clubs specific to handicapped individuals?

Are there any associations or support groups which could help me in getting answers to the above concerns.

Any info u can provide me with would be greatly appreciated.

I can answer one of your questions... look for a house with a Roman shower. These have no doors or lips.

I have a daughter who uses a wheelchair 100% of the time. While she lives in Cleveland, she visits us for two weeks every year. We purchased hand controls for our golf cart. We install them when she comes, she put her chair in the passenger seat and goes all over TV in a golf cart by herself.

There are many support groups for specific health issues. We belong to the MS group with many members who use wheelchairs, rollators or canes. Just google the Village People MS Group for more info.

I don't live in TV. But I suspect golf carts can be modified. Another issue would be any sort of legal issues about use (safety). Do an internet search on "wheel chair modified golf cart".

Things mechanical often need work, so support will be a critical consideration. You should consider talking to one of the local golf cart dealers about it. I would be surprised if you were the first person to ask that sort of question.

You would have to purchase a home with a Roman shower (as someone else stated). Homes are wheelchair accessible by coming thru the garage. Some folks have raised the floors of their lanai's to be even with the in-house floors. As for golf-carts---you can make them accessible as well. I've seen a man on one with a lift on the back for his chair. NOT sure how he makes that transition however. The cart looked to have heavy-duty under-carriage. Some of the family pools have lifts so one can utilize the pool as well.

Some of the rec. centers have lifts to the pool. That way you don't have to buy a home with a pool and install your own lift. We did build our own pool and had a lift installed.

Also if you need the warmth of a hot tub or spa, you will need to put in your own at home. There aren't any hot tubs at the Villages pools.
