Grill not working - ideas?
 

My propane grill doesn't ignite when turned on. I got a new propane tank. I can smell gas slightly when I turn it on, but doesn't ignite. Any ideas I could try?

Sounds like it might be the regulator. Inexpensive and available at Lowes or HD. Easy to change.

The tubes that lead to the burners can be partially clogged.

I take it you have the push button igniter with the AA battery?? Do you hear it snapping (and do you see spark? course with the gas OFF and any fumes cleared) . If you don't hear the snapping it just may be dirty grounding out the spark or weak or dead battery? If not probably the igniter which can be replaced. Pretty easy to replace the igniter assy. you get kit at hardware store. unplug and Unclip igniter loosen the jam nut or screw the cap off (the button that you push. Reverse installation.

If you have a neighbor with a propane grill ask them if you could try your new tank on their grill to see if it works. It could be a bad tank.

Could be a whole bunch of different things as already mentioned. But if your grill has an igniter that's battery powered and if that battery hasn't been changed in a long time, I'll second rc moser's idea - that's where your problem probably is. The battery could be kaput or perhaps the terminals where the battery makes contact have gotten corroded.

If this is a Weber grill It has a safety feature built into it Remove the connection to the tank Open up all the burners and then close them Reconnect The tank Open up the valve on the tank Turn your burner to the on position Click the igniter that you know works The grill should like full flame. You cannot install a new tank with those valves open and you have to clear the airways If you have any questions about this give weber Grill they call they can explain it to you This is only for Weber grills. My brother-in-law works in a hardware store they have this problem all the time
