Help needed - computer running slow

can anyone suggest someone who knows computers. Mine is running too slow.

You can fix it yourself .Down load ccleaner its free clean your c drive and then clean your registry. I use the free Avast for virus it to can clean your computer. Then get rid of all the files you have pictures slow you way down put then on a flash drive. Down load speedtest.net and just how fast your your isp is. The above will improve your computer to a point. If your download speed is slow not much you can do. I dont keep any thing on my computer I put all on a stick.

also, defrag your hard drive - using either the built-in Windows program, or by downloading defraggler (free version)

if still slow, you may need to add more RAM

To add to DDoug's suggestion, after running CCleaner on your hard drive and registry, go to the Startup tab in the Tools section of CCleaner. Check to see how many programs are set to load when your computer starts up. Most of them can be disabled without affecting the programs involved. If too many programs are being loaded at startup, it can slow your computer by hogging the RAM and forcing the computer to shift tasks to the hard drive and back, which is much slower.

All of the above suggestions are good, but sometimes the easiest thing you can do is save your data (preferably in a couple of places) and reinstall the operating system with a fresh format and then reload your programs. Kind of like trading in your old car with all it's problems and getting a new one that doesn't have any (except it isn't as expensive)!

You've received some good suggestions so far, but I'd like to share an experience I had this week that may or may not be relevant to your problem or be a solution.

For some time we've been having a slow connection. About a month ago we lost both internet and phone Comcast service. After trying by phone to fix the problem unsuccessfully, a service call was schedule., Comcast got things working again when he arrived.

Things continued to be slow, but I just wrote it off as slow internet conditions. About a few weeks ago certain websites where hanging my browsers, then we again lost our connection and phone service on this Monday. After again being put through the hoops of doing the same thing I went through 3 times before calling, Comcast decided to schedule me for a service call on Tuesday evening.

When the service tech arrived, he again tried the same things we already tried, then proceeded to test some things out. What he found out is that one of the signal cables needed replacement as well as a signal splitter near the cable modem as well as one outside at their service box at the back corner of our property. End results is that everything is back to normal with a noticeable increase in the speed of the computer.

Now I'm not suggesting that you go call your service provider right away, but if other suggestions lead you to a dead end, then you should consider contacting you provider and ask them to send out a tech to check out your connections, splitters and cable wires to see if there are any defects or if they're not performing to specifications.

On my windows computers at work, I use Advanced System Care. You can use the free download. It will work great and speed up your system.

one more thing you can try:

on DESKTOP you should have COMPUTER icon

open that up then right-click on your main drive icon (usually C: )

click on PROPERTIES

if the box marked "Index this drive for faster searching" has a check mark in it, I suggest you click on it to remove it

when you click on OK it will ask if you want to apply just to C:| or to all sub-folders etc. - go for the latter

it will take a few minutes to redo all of your computer's attributes, but should speed up operations for you after that

don't worry - you can't do any harm - you'll find searching for files a bit slower, but most people don't do much of that anyway
