Working while living in the Villages

We will be moving to the Villages this fall/winter. I am a few years behind my spouse as far as retirement goes and will continue to work even once moving to the Villages. Does anyone else out there work full-time jobs? I may need to start a support group for those of us who still have a few years to go! :22yikes:

I work full time and hubby works part time. We'd love to join your group but we work too much and don't have time!! :)

A support group sounds good! Nobody much wants to hear me bitch about my job. :-)

According to my countdown timer, I've got 1665 days, 9 hours and 33 minutes to retirement. Yay, I guess?

Other than perhaps not fully utilizing your amenity fees, it's still very pleasant to live here, completely retired or not.

we both work full time and will continue to do so for the forseeable future. salaries are considerably less than almost any other place in the US.

I will be moving to TV in a few months and will also be working full time. I am so glad to know I won't be alone. A support group sounds like a great idea! :)

Don't count on being able to find a DECENT PAYING full time job here...great place to retire to, but not to work.

Moved here in March after finding FT employment and my husband is still up North until he finds work--yes we have a few years left until we can finally play and enjoy ourselves also--but just waking up to the warmth and sunshine is enough for me along with all the great neighbors I've met thus far. I support group would be fun--keep me posted when you are down here to stay.

It all depends on what job you are looking for--found a comparable job to the one I had up North and am working only 4 days/week making the same $ as no state taxes. Plus because I travel get paid for mileage and cell phone. If you need to continue working--there are jobs out there--they are building so much--who are they going to employee??

My wife and I are both working and will be for a while. We are both 40something and have lived in here over a year now. It is a bit of a different experience since you are still employed and most activities are built around folks that are retired. But all in all, you do well!!!!

My husband and I have been living here for 8 1/2 years & still working full-time. I work with a lot of people 50 - 65 years old so you won't be alone. One bit of advice - don't expect to make much money here. Most jobs pay $10-$11 per hour to start. Culture shock...... But hey, we don't have to shovel snow!!

At least age discrimination isn't a factor here! Every single place I've ever been to -- shops, restaurants, insurance agencies, banks, state offices, etc.-- has employees who look to be 50+. And certainly The Villages administrative departments are full of us.

I will also need to work when my husband retires. I was hoping to secure a position before the move... How is the job market now for out-of-state job seekers? I expected lower wages, but am hoping mainly to cover my health insurance. :)

Are your jobs located in TV? If not, how far is your commute? This is my first post, so apologies for all the questions!

PeggyS8 06-09-2013 06:33 PM

So appreciative of all the posts. I am so glad to know I will not be alone. I was a bit worried that I would be a working outcast.
