Under 55

I'm a 47 year old female and interested in living in the villages. I am interested in working there perhaps as a teacher in the Charter School. Would it be allowed and would I feel out of place. I ask anyone, "What are your thoughts on the subject?" Thank you

No problem. Twenty percent of the residents of TV can be under 55. In addition there are other options for housing near TV. The Charter School is one of the best schools in the State of Florida and many of the teachers are under 55 so you will have much in common.

Your only real problem will be the low salary, so be prepared for that. Otherwise, you'll fit right in at the school and in TV. While the vast majority will be over 55, with many well over 65, they're so active that you'll be surprised when you find out their real ages.

Keep in mind that unless you plan to live in the special area for employees no children under the age of 18 can live with you.
There are plenty of people here under the age of 55 and they get along with and blend in with the rest of us.

Actually it's under the age of 19.

You will fit in fine here most people do not worry about how old you are

If you are a teacher coming from a state where the teachers are unionized, be prepared. Any new teacher in the State of Florida serves with a one year contract. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but it is a fact. Also, The Villages Charter Schools do not participate in the State pension fund, it's a 401k program. There is a medium amount of turnover at the schools. They normally pay the prevailing wage based on service. New teachers= around $36,000 with the top end around $50,000. If want more specific information, feel free to private message me.

Our daughter is 45 and a teacher; I've shown her the Charter School information and the "Family Friendly Village" mentioned above. I believe it is Buffalo Ridge?

However, being that she is still raising her children.....an 8 year old and an 11 year old, both super active in community activities of all sorts, school sports and community drama clubs, Earth Girls which is like the old Girl Scouts, etc.......it makes more sense for her and her husband to remain where they are, close to college towns and close to child friendly activities and sports. Her 19 year old graduated from high school a year ago and is living independently now........but the two little ones would not be allowed to live in The Villages.

I had assumed, wrongly I guess, that anyone under 55 could indeed live in The Villages as long as the other spouse was 55 years old....or older.

Our son is nearing 42 and when he and his young wife visited, they both loved The Villages and he told her that he could see himself retiring there at age 55...........however, that will never happen as his two little ones are 2 years old and 7 months old....with more babies on the way.

Ocala looks like a nice area..........it's immediately above The Villages.
Looks to have a vibrant downtown and a mixture of all ages...........
Ocala is the "horse capital".......so lots going on if you like that.......
John Travolta and his wife own a horse ranch in Ocala..............

If I were your age, I would not want to live in a retirement community.
You are still young...........it seems like yesterday we were in our 40's; now our kids are.

Neither one has to be 55. When we moved here I was 48 & hubby was 49. You just can't be younger than 19.

Thanks for refreshing my memory........that must be the 80% clause whereas 80% of the residents must be 55+ and the remaining 20% can be younger.

But for the 80% that are 55+....their spouses can be any age, as long as one of them is 55+ ......

A Florida law, I assume.

Regarding this quote above:

"There are plenty of people here under the age of 55 and they get along with and blend in with the rest of us."

I'd modify that to say: "....they get along with and enhance the rest of us".

"Retirement" community is not the most appropriate term for TV. "Adult" community better describes it.

hello and welcome. What do you teach?

Live here and work here full time as a nurse. I am 39, Husband is 49! Just need to be older than 19 and so does everyone in your household...you will fit in just fine. There are a lot of "younger" than 55 villagers out there--don't take any negative remarks personally. Respect your elders! My saying remains the same when someone ask me "Why would you want to live here with us? All the older adults?" I just smile and say "Didn't you wish you could have moved here 30 years ago?" I love it here!!!!

I "get it" and can see where you are coming from.......

When we were in our twenties and thirties, taking the kids to Disney World every year for school vacation week, we'd always say "I wish we could live here and/or open a business here".........actually, we did check into the business aspect......also, at that time, there were no regular communities there, but several have since sprung up........such as the town of CELEBRATION which is about 3 to 4 miles from Disney World and built for families.........homes and condos for sale. Last I looked, it was attractive.

In our own community, we've always enjoyed our elders which have enriched everyone's lives.......including those of our children when they were growing up. Everyone needs extra sets of grandparents to dote on the kids........and/or the parents I might add. We had wonderful gatherings with all age groups.........many happy memories.
