Gout or Sesamoiditis?
 

I am suffering from toe pain on the bottom of my big toe and the joint. It is red, swollen and it hurts when I lift my toe up. I am unable to put any weight on it. My podiatrist says it is semoiditis. He told me to ice it and wear a boot. My rheumy says it is gout and gave me colcrys 0.6 mg 3.5 days ago. It still hurts and is swollen. Any thougts/advice?

Did your rheumy dr do blood tests or schedule an X-ray? Though neither test is totally definitive, they could show if it is gout. Semoiditis does cause pain under your toe. What did the podiatrist recommend?

The podiatrist recommend wearing a boot, ice and a anti-flammatory. My rheumatoid did not do blood work or do an X-ray. I'm not sure what to do next. Any advice is welcomed.

I don't understand why your rheumy didn't do a blood test for uric acid before starting you on colchicine. Any talk about injecting cortisone to help with the pain? I'm 60 and had gout in my early 30's I think , and boy, what PAIN! I'd give either Doc a call on Monday if the pain is no better.

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TOTV. Sounds like gout to me. Very painful

my guess is gout IF the toe is painful all the time - OR - semoiditis if the pain happens when you are walking on it.

i would have preferred a blood test re the uric acid, at least to confirm the diagnosis and then to plan my dietary changes accordingly.

have you looked up the foods that can bring on an attack of the gout to try and identify food as a cause of the pain. biggest surprise to hubs and i came from finding out from a television news health snippet that strawberries are a major contributing factor for a flare-up! added them to our 'do not eat' list - and that is a killer when wintering in florida!!!

I would insist on a blood test if that doesn't happen then find another rheumatologist. Gout is in the rheumatoid arthritis family and can be very serious. Diet (I believe) can contribute to your symptoms. That being said, if it is gout you need to be proactive in it's treatment. Discussing this on a "social network" site...asking for thoughts on symptoms won't be helpful, though you might be able to find a way towards a practioner. Best wishes in your quest!!!!

Since I am a master builder for uric acid kidney stones I will assume that the toe pain I periodically experience is well gout

Have your doc give you a prescription for Allopurinol and/or Indomethocin. Will relieve the excrutiating pain pretty quickly.

Thank you so much for all the advice! I love TOTV for their insight and life experiences. Also, I had no idea strawberries were an issue (I have been eating alot of strawberries lately).

When my gout was diagnosed they did it thru a urine test on specimens collected over 24 hour period.

One of the symptoms that I have (that is a little confusing) is I have suffered from plantar fasciitis before, so I pull my toes toward me each morning before getting out of bed. I am unable to move my big toe up without alot of pain. Did any of you notice this symptom when you had gout?

If it's gout, it will hurt whether you move it or not. Its continuous. When you have a flare up, you can't even stand to have a bed sheet on it.
