Is your pet licensed? It is the Sumter County Law

A friend of ours was bitten by a dog yesterday while walking on the sidewalk here in The Villages. Dog was on a leash but obviously not being controlled.

A Sumter County Sheriff Deputy came to the seen and stated that the dog owner would be fined $300.00 for not having a Sumter County pet license.

I wonder how many pet owners in Sumter County have a pet license for their pets. My guess is that very few do. Am I wrong?

Link to Sumter County site is below.

Do they give you a tag to put on your dog's collar?

Patty55 07-05-2013 12:04 PM

I thought the Vet did it when you get your shots, am I wrong?

Both my fur kids are licensed. Yes, they do give you a tag. Patty I think the vet gives you a rabies tag.

Two tags - one for shots (rabies) by the vet and another for license.

My mutt likes to think of it as her "BLING!"

Bosoxfan 07-05-2013 12:50 PM

Yep, our pup is licensed. The vet can issue the license when you get the shots.

Patty55 07-05-2013 01:06 PM

Checked my latest Vet bill, it was only $5.

No. You need a local license (but you'd probably get a bye if you bring all documentation with you and something happened).

It would be better to spend the $5.00 and save yourself a $300 fine.

I'm curious to know how this situation evolved. A leashed dog biting someone is unusual. Did the man have a dog also? Thanks.

She was taken to the emergency room to tend to the puncture wounds on her leg and is doing well. The dog was taken to the correct Sumter County department to be observed for I believe 10 days as it could not be determined as to any shots the dog had gotten. From what I was told the person walking the dog was a neighbor of the dog owner who was out of town.
