Charles Laughton & Gettysburg Address
Watched Charles Laughton recite the Gettysburg Address in Ruggles of Red Gap on TCM last night. Very moving! Bill Hader, who opened and closed the film pointed out that this recitation drove home the theme of the film, that straighted-laced, class-bound member of the servant class experienced first hand the openess and egalitarianism inherent in the American spirit. Alas, has that disappeared from our nation?
