Love Bugs - how troublesome and how bad is the infestation?
 

I am thinking of relocating to the Villages and have some concerns about "Love Bugs" and wonder how troublesome they are and how bad the infestation is and the duration. Could someone please respond?

I work in the Villages and I drive "all the way" from Nancy Lopez to The Villages hospital in a car, and we use about 2 gallons of gas per week in the golf cart (that is a lot of driving) and I have had no problem with love bugs. I don't even own bug spray remover. Now if you drive up and down I 75 during the height of the season your car will be a mess. Sometimes the bugs can be a benign annoyance at the squares but they are too busy doing their things to intentionally bother people. They are here only two months a year so on a scale of 1-10 they are a 2 when they are out.

They come out in May and Sept and last about 4 weeks each time (a little less in Sept than May, it seems); They do not bite or sting or buzz; they seem to like auto (diesel?) exhaust so are a real issue on the turnpike and interstates; more of a minor annoyance on local roads; they are resting til about 10 am then start flying about until early evening then quiet down again. I don't feel as though they are a hindrance to daily outdoor activity. On the good news side, we don't seem to have any problem with mosquitos or regular house flies here. Bug problems are far less than I had expected when moving to Florida.
