What do do about mail? And other questions.

In October, we're moving to The Villages. We've rented a place for October and may possibly extend until November, depending how long it takes to find and close on our own home. Does buying a new spec home take less time to close?

I know the post office here will hold our mail for 30 days, but then what? For those who have been down this road, what did you do about your mail? Can we get a post office box down there?

Any other advice you can share would be greatly appreciated. We haven't moved in 20 years, so it's all like new. Our furniture and most of the household stuff is being re-homed. We're only bringing our personal items, clothing, books, quilting fabrics (I couldn't part with them!), and other sentimental decorative items. We've already cleaned out a lot of stuff so, I think we're good in that department. Anything else I should know before getting there?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Cheryl

can you have someone pick up your mail...get a post office box and have you mail delivered there...closing on a finished spec home about 30days or less

Use General Delivery to Postmaster Here, for pickup

At the USPS website, at this link.....Click the "General Delivery" tab in the grey horizontal menu after the first paragraphs about forwarding:

General Delivery

Get your mail even if you’re on the road, new to town, or between permanent addresses. Mail addressed to you at General Delivery will be held at the area’s main Post Office™ for up to 30 days. All you have to do is pick it up.
General Delivery is a great choice if you don’t have a permanent address. People can send you mail by using the town name and ZIP Code™, like this...
JOHN DOE
GENERAL DELIVERY
ANYTOWN NY 12345-9999
In medium to large cities with multiple ZIP Codes, you’ll want to make sure senders use the ZIP Code for the area’s main Post Office. The ZIP+4® extension 9999 indicates general delivery.

To find the main Post Office in an area, speak to any Post Office associate or call 1-800-ASK-USPS® (1-800-275-8777).

You could consider renting a mailbox at one of the two Village Pack & Ship locations - then sign up for weekly premium mail forwarding at your local post office.

General Delivery works great...used it for six years when we travelled the country in our RV. I would suggest you check with your local post office to make sure you can use a general delivery address on your Change of Address card.

We use the mailbox attached to the address where we are renting. Ask the person who is renting to you.

If you buy a spec home you will be given a firm closing date (and time if you are not closing by mail) on the day you sign the contract. They are running a little over 30 days right now due to heavy demand.
