What did you leave behind, that you wish you'd brought?
Is it possible to downsize toooo much?
What did you not bring that you immediately had to repurchase? Just don't want to get over zealous with this downsizing process!! Thx! |
Nothing. N O T H I N G. Wish I'd left more behind.

I am packing now, moving to TV on sept 14th. Trying to downsize now, leaving all furniture here on LI, NY. Kids buying house, told them to throw away, sell or throw out. Just taking clothes, patio furniture, and few things, enough to fill a small POD. Excited, nervous and missing my miracle grandson. Only a short plane ride away. Anxious to be there so I can stop cleaning out closets, drawers etc.

Bring as little as possible. I see people moving in who are often totally overwhelmed with their garage full of boxes after the basics and necessities are in place in the house. Being unable to put the car in the garage is a total drag (with summer/fall heat), and worse yet, the boxes stacked in there are a constant reminder of WORK you're supposed to do but don't want to because you came here to rest from downsizing and have fun and meet people.
I would have the excess boxes of personal belongings not needed right away delivered to a storage unit at Extra Space on highway 466 here in the middle of TV, and just leave it a few weeks. Then once you're settled, go there and start either a) eliminating or b) finding a place for the things in your new place. It's a no-brainer to use Extra Space storage units b/c they're always $20 for first month's rent regardless of size (then it would go up to normal price which is good anyway), and it's all inside a well-secured, air conditioned new building with good freight elevators. This would allow you to enjoy the new home and people without looking at all that stuff in boxes piled in the garage....avoid that nagging feeling. |
Don't forget to bring your coats!! yes it can get cold in the winter!!

We had to sell our nuce dinette since it does not fit in the brkfast nook here, and now we need to buy table and chairs for nook....

freezer and 24 set of dishes, glasses and wine glasses. Who thought I would be entertaining?
|
Nothing!
Have replaced many pieces of furniture we did bring. Kept my dishes and kitchen stuff and have added and subtracted over the years, the same as I would have done had we not moved. Just remember, new home, new activities, different needs. |

I don't agree with the throw-it-all-out theory.
There was a dresser upon which our tv sat in the great room. I loved it, but we sold it. There was a tall grandfather clock. I loved it, but we sold it. I miss those two things a lot. I would say if you're "grieving" the loss of an item before you even get down here, bring it with you and give yourself the chance to change your mind, rather than regret your choice. The only things I don't regret not having now are things that the kids took--Waterford crystal, great-grandmother's Limoges, lovely comfy sectional couch, 1967 Mustang, professional-grade copper pots and pans. I know I will see these things again. Just one girl's opinion. |
Step ladder.
