Advice where to put cat litter box in Designer

Hi,

This may seem to be a silly post but as you can see from my avitar we have 2 3 yr old kitties. We recently bought an aspen but haven't moved in yet. My cats are indoor cats and I've been trying to decide where to put their litter box so it will be out of the way and we don't smell it it the main living area's. We've thought about the laundry room but with the opening and closing of the garage which is close to the laundry room they could easily get out the door if someone happens to come in when there using the box. Any idea's would be helpful.

Almost there......East New York, Queens, Floral park, Hicksville, Commack and soon The Villages !!

We put our kitty's litter box on the lanai under a table out of the way. We have an open lanai. No smell at all. We installed a pet door the kind you buy at Home Depot or Lowe's and put it in the slider. It worked great for us.

boy, I'm glad I'm not the only one...tried the garage, kitty just uses the whole garage.
so am moving it to the lanai...today he went..nevermind, he just has to be a lanai kitty for awhile.

Thanks for your idea's it makes sense, but still paranoid that they'll get out while I'm asleep.

I'm new to the idea of a "Lanai". My cats have their claws. I'm afraid they will stay on the lanai all night if I create the door for them, and when I wake up in the morning they will have clawed into the screen or worse yet found a way to get out. Is anyone else worried about that ?

I shall be curious to hear more replies as we will be in the same situation soon. We have two Bengals (Asian Leopard Cats) and they are indoor too and we plan on a Designer home. I too considered the Laundry room so look forward to other possible ideas. We also have to find room for the 4 foot in diameter Cat Wheel!

Our kitty didn't do that but he was clawless.

Mom and I built an Iris for our cat's litter box, i planned to put the box in that niche off the laundry area. After reading these posts, I'm going to try the lanai first. I'd like to have a built-in desk in that niche.

We also have 2 Bengals (with a wheel as well ). Our plan is to outlive them, and relocate to our retirement destination without them. They're fun cats, but quite a handful.

Ah bless, Funny I thought we may be the only ones with Bengals let alone having a cat wheel! Our 2 girls are a handful with 2 different personalities but must say could not live without them and that's why we are spending a lot of money to bring them over to the USA from the UK. Good luck to you and all your future plans, cats or not!

This may sound strange but I know several who put the litter box (doesn't need a cover, just needs to be deep) in the bathtub. When you have guests, you have to move it but otherwise, just close the shower curtains when you have company. Just put a rug or plastic bag under the box, cover the drain, sit on the edge of the tub to clean. If you have a Litter Genie, no fuss, no muss, no smell.

Do I read this right, you built an Iris model just for your cat's litter box?

I must admit it is one of the reasons I chose the Iris. But, I also like that niche for office space.

I lived about 8 miles from Washington, DC for 26 years and had a lot of out of town company. I hated having the litter box in the bathroom. I also use clumping litter and I'm not sure how that would work out in the bathtub for my two girls.

I watch a lot of cats. Most people place the litter pan in the master bathroom, under the counter, where one would put a stool.
If you place the pan out on the lanai, I guess you would have to install a kitty door also, since you wouldn't want to leave your lanai sliders open and suck out the A/C. Just a thought ...

That is why we are considering the Iris. We do have an automatic litter box and it is great.
If we didn't get an iris we were going to put a cat door in a pantry cabinet in the laundry or perhaps just remove the bottom door. What can I say, cat lovers are just as passionate about their critters as are dog owners. We love both and when we had our german shepherd she and our siamese were best buds; they sleptmwith the siamese draped over the shepherds back!

Actually when you put in a pet door they cover the entire area and don't suck out the air conditioning like you stated. These door resemble the look of a sliding glass door. The top has real glass and they are painted white and fit seamlessly into the existing sliding glass door. I am surprised that you haven't seen one since you watch alot of cats.
