This is a picture of one of the feral kittens I am feeding at Sweetbay at LSL. This one is getting brave. As I put down the food she (I think) will rub her cheek against my hand. The other one won't come near me yet. I am going to try to trap tonight. Wish me luck! If anyone is interested in trying to tame them and make them adoptable, let me know right away. My husband won't let me have any more animals.

lovinganimals, What a nice photo. Princess Molly of Schaumburg (my cat) and I hope this kitten will find a forever home.

Feral kittens often do not make good pets unless they are taken very early (before weaning.)

I know, however I have 2 that were feral that I "fostered" from a rescue. They were a bit older and did not think they were adoptable so their ears are tipped. I sat in a dog cage with them every night for a few months. They are both very loving lap cats now. Sometimes, you just never know :)

What does, ..."so their ears are tipped," mean?

kittygilchrist 09-09-2013 09:44 PM

they get spayed or neutered at the vet, who clips the corner of an ear, so nobody else will capture them to be brought for neutering, and they are left in the wild instead of being euthanized.

I did not know that. I would imagine that is a very controversial, or at the very least a widely discussed topic. Thank you, Kitty.

Why controversial? You have to look close to see the missing tip.

We fed feral cats for about 20 years and usually couldn't touch them but they didn't miss many meals.

That's a beautiful feral kitten. Chuck, I think the controversial part is not tipping the ear, it's returning feral cats to the wild. Such a tough life for them. But I guess they deserve to live their lives in the wild, it's not up to humans to play God.

With so much land here, its a shame there is not a farm for ferals. I hate the thought of putting these cats back at Sweetbay, but have no other option.

I know exactly how you feel. There are hundreds of feral cats living on golf courses and in parking lots, scrounging for food. There is a cat who has lived for years in the Bonefish Parking lot. The staff sometimes feeds her. I always want to help the cat, but she seems to make out OK living under cars.

Imagine being a feral cat during a Chicago winter (or winter anywhere up north). I have never seen a feral cat near my house here in Chicagoland, but my cat sitter feeds two of them every day, and they live in her yard. They are so used to her that they will come up next to her and sit near her while she is sitting on her deck or while she is gardening.

One of our cats was a feral ...he was shy at first but never had a problem in 14 years...never ran outside...miss him everyday

dsned 09-11-2013 08:11 AM

Those cats can spread disease and they kill the wildlife. I love our birds here in the villages and the feral cats should be put down.
