Fall flowers
 

Now that fall is in the air, what type of flowers do well now and about how long will they last? I'm not sure what to put out front in my large pots for fall color.

I'd say in the next few weeks the villages will start planting pansies. We always plant what the Villages plant.

Last fall when we came down for the winter, Home Depot had the most gorgeous reddish-orange geraniums in small hanging plastic containers. I put one in a large standing container on our lanai (morning to afternoon sun) along with some side plants. It totally flourished, grew to gigantic proportions. I'm just now letting it die off to replant the planter. Over the summer it got leggy and woody.

I will definitely plant another geranium in there.

We had put impatiens in our front walkway, but they did not do well. But maybe it was just the wrong spot--too much or too little sun.

Yes, geraniums do well this time of year, but are subject to frost. Don't know if your lanai is closed in or not? Geraniums don't like lots of heat, and do not do good in summer. (Shaded areas are good though) Of course , Mums are good now, but everyone has Mums!! Petunias are great now, before frost. Colder weather, pansies and snap dragons are good. I'm sure if you attend "Twice on Tuesdays" they would have great suggestions, along with Florida friendly plants. Impatiens like shade.

I kept the geraniums on the lanai, which is not enclosed. It's covered and gets a few hours of sun each day. This summer they started spazzing out, so I am now going to redo the pot after a December trip--so third week in December.

We have three sunken pots along our front walk that get afternoon sun. Had alyssum in them but had to take them out when we went home last spring. I'd love any suggestions as what to put in there this winter. We tried impatience last year, but they didn't do well, even when covered for frost. (We neve got any forst, btw.)

We love to visit Village Palms, on CR 466 just before Rolling Acres Rd. Each season they have the appropriate flowers for the time of the year. They are just now getting the first shipments of 'fall' flowering plants, and I am sure that they will have more and more as the weeks go by.

How about Ornamental Cabbages and/or Pansies?

Pansies are great suggestion!!! I remember one morning after the sprinkler was on, (winter time) my pansies had ice on them, from the sprinkler. As soon as sun came out, "Bingo" they just had their beautiful flowers on, like nothing happened. Good Choice!! Snap Dragons do well also in frost.
