Frank Hall's Nursery wants my palm tree...
 

A guy offered me $200 to take away a large jelly palm and replace it with a fan palm. I'll sell it, is that a decent price? Anyone with experience with them? Thanks...they can have it, it's more trouble than it's worth.

What's a jelly palm?

A pindo, I think. We have a big one and were told that the berries were good for jelly.

Mine is 15 ft easily. Maybe I could hold out for a bit more, but it's really a pain for me having it. Climbing up to cut the fronds and the "berries".

I was more interested in anyone having them there before, how well did they treat your lawn? Mine is right in the middle of a big corner lot front yard.

no reputable nurseryman would purchase a tree from someones' yard. trees that are grown in nurseries are inspected by the state dept of agriculture, so that they are disease and pest free. this is unethical.

did you ask him to come look at it or what?

I agree, when we wanted to have our lady palm removed, a nursery told us just what you said..

b4 the palm patrols (giggle) made their weekly request for trimming...Lot of work owning a palm and the bugs love them...

What they do with the palm after they buy it from you is really immaterial and not your worry. If you find the palm to be high maintenance and would like it to be removed, sounds like a no-brainer. Let them remove it, replace with another palm, and pay you $200. Good deal.

Don't forget the labor involved also??? I'd take it, if I was you!!

What type of "fan palm" are you getting in exchange? I would definitely ask for the species name, and make SURE it is cold hardy for TV. There are many fan palms that don't like temps below freezing & will show damage, or worse yet...die. Your pindo palm, on the other hand, is rock solid cold hardy for TV. If I were you I would demand a sabal palmetto since they are slow growing & it will be fairly low maintenance. I would NOT accept a Washingtonia since they are very fast growing & in just a few years you will have to hire someone to trim the dead fronds.

Otherwise I think it's a reasonable deal. Large, trunked pindos aren't in high demand so I believe $200 is a fair price.
