Walkers in a Roundabout - accident waiting to happen!
Today as I went west on Odell to Buena Vista (at Seabreeze) I saw some dangerous behavior. As I came 3/4 of the way around the roundabout to go left (south) on Buena Vista, as I came around the final section of the curve, at the opening of my inner lane to exit the roundabout, there were two woman walking IN the roundabout. They were not visible to me before getting close to them because of the shrubbery etc. in the circle's island, and I had to hit the brakes to avoid hitting them. They were taking their time walking in this roundabout lane, too.
Were the tunnels not built for multi-modal use and crossing, by walkers?? They were walking in roundabout lanes when they could have used the tunnels to cross where it's not even safe or allowed for golf carts with motor power to cross Buena Vista. They seemed oblivious to the dangers they were causing themselves and drivers. Roundabouts are built to keep traffic flowing, not to have to stop because of pedestrians. It could have resulted in a pile-up of cars behind me, or worse, they could have been accidentally hit by a car, which I never want to have haunting me nor victims. |

In 4 years I've never seen this. However, I have seen a lot of other strange things in the roundabouts including drivers going the wrong way. If I were going to cross Buena Vista on foot, I would do it well down from the roundabout. I would not use the tunnel. Some of the tunnels are dark and don't leave a lot of room for walkers. You're more likely to get hit by a golf cart because to driver can't see you when transitioning from sun to the dark tunnel. The Seabreeze tunnel already has a visibility problem on the Seabreeze side.

Some pedestrians seem to believe they are invincible based on their risky behavior.
In that same vein I saw a woman stop her Cadillac in the left lane on route 466 get out to pick up a turtle walking to the front of her car. What a set up to have be hit as a pedestrian with your own car I also saw a woman stopped in the golf cat path talking on the phone. I guess neither of these ladies were concerned about their safety or that of others. |
I've seen this too, and have found it alarming. Not sure about the legality of it, though. On this subject, my wife disagrees with me. She finds walking through the tunnels to be even more dangerous. She's a walker, and I'm not. I think both are dangerous for walkers.

But to cross Buena Vista by walking IN the outer vehicular lane, at the exit point for somebody coming halfway or 3/4 of the way around the roundabout by car or truck (for whom the roundabout is intended), is insanity. Why do people refuse to admit there are some things they cannot do safely on foot? |
Too entitled to believe that anyone else matters but themselves.
Too arrogant to believe that the rules apply to them. Too stupid to believe that anything can go wrong. |
