Captain Phillips.
The Numbers News - Contest: Over and Under the Sea
Would like to hear reviews about this movie. Looks very good and Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors and seems like a very down-to-earth celebrity. In the meantime, take a stab at the-Numbers weekend box office contest to determine the weekend box office take. Your best guess has to be in really soon by about 1:00 P.M. EST., October 11, 2013. |
My wife and I just got back from LSL where we saw the movie "Captain Phillips". We thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Tom Hanks was superb (no suprise there) as were the guys that played the Somali pirates. I highly recommend it.

I saw this movie in St. Louis Saturday night. As everybody already mentioned: Highly to recommend.

Agree that Captain Phillips was a very good movie.
Just saw this today at the Old Mill Playhouse with a crowd of about 100. Very good movie. Especially like that they tried to tell the story from the point of view of the Somali pirates as well as the cargo ship's crew as well as Captain Phillips. :BigApplause:

Saw it last night. My heart didn't stop pounding for a long time. Plus.... I am proud to say that my husband served on the Navy ship that is in the movie! Not at that time, but sure made me proud!

Really liked it. I especially liked that, unlike Olympus Has Fallen and other recent action movies, our armed serviced did not look inept. In fact, the movie showed how well we actually perform.

About six weeks ago we went and saw the Woody Allen film 'Blue Jasmine' with Cate Blanchett at SS and thought this was the best movie we've seen in quite awhile. Then we went and saw 'Prisoners' with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and thought, this is really riveting, even better and gave it 10 stars. Then we saw 'Gravity', and once again it was better than I expected and was really great in 3D. Finally we saw 'Captain Phillips', and only expected to see a good film, nothing great, but we were surprised. It was my favorite of the group, kept my attention all the way through. Even though it ran 2 hours and 10 minutes, it didn't feel long. Much like 'Prisoners', also a long film, I wouldn't know where to cut, you are getting your money's worth with 'Captain Phillips'.

Great movie, Tom Hanks was excellent, so were all the actors, very realistic, totally recommend it.

I give "Captain Phillips" 2 stars out of 5
I give it 1 star because Tom Hanks was in it and another star because it was based on a true story. That's a total of 2 stars and I'm being generous.
Here are some of the reasons I didn't like it: 1) The plot offered no surprises. We knew from the very beginning what was going to happen: Somali pirates took over a ship and eventually their plan to collect a ransom was foiled. 2) The only thing the movie had going for it, besides Tom Hanks, was non-stop violent behavior. It was tense from the very beginning and got progressively worse as time went on. Violence is basically all they had going so they needed to stretch it out with the help of a strong leading character like Tom Hanks. Give me a break! 3) The part about the lifeboat, because it was so prolonged and bobbing up and down, caused me to get motion sickness. I think the camera must have been hand-held and it was panning all over the place. It reminded me of when we first started taking 8 millimeter home movies about 65 years ago. At one point I left to get a drink of water and I almost felt like I needed to throw up. 4) The best part, if you can call it that, is when the 3 Somali pirates got shot. I was so thankful that it was over. I didn't start feeling normal until several hours later. Warning: If you have a tendency to get motion sickness, it might be best to avoid seeing this movie. |

I give it 5 stars. I especially liked the US Navy scenes ... kind of like the modern day equivalent of the cavalry riding to the rescue |
1. Oh how silly. Of course we knew what was going to happen. That is the way it works with true stories that have been in the news.
2. Frankly I found leaving harbor, getting ready for the trip, and the protracted boarding of the pirates far more anxiety producing than the rest of the movie. I didn't think it was as violent as so many movies and thought it really was about how to manage a bad situation strategically. 3. Guess you should have taken dramamine if you get seasick. 4. I was thrilled they got shot but really thrilled at how well executed the Navy plan was. My only complaint is he fell out of the Vermont accent a few times but I can live with it. |
