I am planning on taking my car from Nova Scotia to our Florida home and leaving it there.I plan to register it in Florida but have been told this can be a cumbersome process.Are there any Canadians out there that might offer some advise?

Sorry I can't help .... We've bought vehicles in Florida, driven them to Canada, and registered them in Ontario. Most people fly to Florida and buy a car there because cars are cheaper and haven't been exposed to road salt.

I think you need to check with the tax people if you are leaving the vehicle in FL as there may be tax implications. Also there may be a requirement to have the vehicle inspected for compliance with FL regulations.

We are driving our own vehicle down for our visit this winter, but when we return again next fall for a short visit we will buy a vehicle to keep in FL for future visits.

I'm not from Canada however I can relate my experience. I brought my car down from NJ and took it to the Sumter County Tax Collector this past Monday. I had previously downloaded forms off their site to "Apply for Title" and "Verification of Mileage". I brought these forms along with proof of Florida car insurance, my driver license, car title, and NJ registration. The whole process didn't take but 15 minutes. I was given a FL registration and plate and I should receive the title in about 2 weeks.

Last fall, about this time, I bought a new for me (used car) in Cincinnati and I lived in Kentucky. Kentucky has a very high property tax that you pay every year that your car is re-registered. For that reason I decided to bring it down here. We actually brought it here on a 30 day tag from Ohio.

It took about 20 minutes total to get the Florida registration and the title was mailed 2 weeks later. You must have Florida Insurance. We have Kentucky drivers license, no problem. Other that that nothing else unusual.

I know the poster is asking about Canada. I guess it could be different so a quick call to the court house would clear that up. But call the court house on Powell road they deal with this all the time.

Drove my car from CT to FL. I got a new driver license but must have Florida insurance first. I also registered the car, got signed up for voter registration,(permanet resident), and received a new title in two weeks.

Total price was $510.80. It ain't cheap.

They charge about $31 something for just a change of address. Ouch!!!!

OK, this may be what is needed. It is the EPA regs for imprtation of vehicles and emission compliance. If you are bringing it for less than 1 year, for your own usage then there are no restrictions as far as I can gather.

You will need to let your insurance know that the vehicle will be out of the country for an extended period and your rates may be affected.

If you are leaving it for longer than a year then the regs below would apply. I would contact them for a definitive answer.
