Standby Generators

I was wondering if anyone has had a standby generator installed and what size would be needed to run the central air in the event of a power outage.

Re: Standby Generators

Can't say anything about a generator, but we have been here 6 months without a power outage. The last 24 years we lived in Tampa. Very, very few outages there also, I do remember one Dec 1983. It wasn't actually an outage, but a rolling blackout. It was Christmas and we had a devil of a time cooking our turkey.
I'd be interested if those who have lived here longer have lost their electricity. If so, was it very long?

We bought almost three years ago and haven't heard of any outages, like Fumar points out utilities are underground. Then again my neighbor does have a pretty big (size of a refrigerator) stand by generator at her house, I hope I stay on her good side.

We had one and needed it in Virginia. We have been here two years and while we talked about it, we don't see the need. No long blackouts here in two years even with the tornado and hurricanes.

I've been in my house since Feb '05 and think the power's gone down for maybe three minutes in maybe three instances! Not from storms, but some malfunction elsewhere. Yes, everything's underground!
The power company (Sumter Electric Coop or SECO) in Sumter County does NOT guarantee full-time service for those who may need it, (that is, perhaps someone in your household requires oxygen or other life-support machinery), so you might want to consider a generator, if it is needed.
