Fruit Trees: what kind to plant?
 

We are just starting to look into landscaping and are considering a couple of fruit trees. Any recommended nurseries that has a selection? We like peaches, oranges or grapefruit what would you plant? Are there any negatives having fruit trees?

You will have to cover them when it frosts, spray them and keep the tree trimmed.

Fyi, we have friends who have a small grapefruit tree. When it is producing, it is a huge job to pick all the fruit, and it is much more than they can use. After seeing them trying to give away fruit all the time, we decided against growing a tree.

And not to mention phylum subphylum rodentia.

They love the fallen fruit.

Fruit trees make a mess and bring bugs and animals that will also effect your neighbor . For that reason areas have rules against then. The older areas still allow them. Yes people still put them in. But if you are caught you will have to remove them.

You sure about that? This is Florida for heavens sake.

No peach trees. They can't survive the intense sun. Navel oranges are great or tangerines.

We have a grafted tree (fruit cocktail tree) that is supposed to have limes, grapefruit, lemons, oranges, honeybells, the whole shebang. Have had it for two years. The meier lemon part of the tree produces about 30-40 lemons a year. This year that is all we got except for 1 grapefruit. The rest of the tree hasn't flowered yet. We're hoping.

Recall a presentation on home gardeners growing fruit trees in The Villages last year. I attended because I was potentially interested in planting one in my backyard.

My summary of the presentation: In general ... fruit trees are more of a pain in the neck than they are worth (for all the reasons previous posters have mentioned .) The speaker suggested that if an individual is determined to plant a fruit tree , there was a small , particular variety of lemon tree ( don't recall the name ) that was the best bet. Perhaps someone else on this Board or a local nursery would know. I decided not to plant any.
