WHAT ARE THESE PLANTS

We noticed these plants especially the larger closest to the house. What are they? I think we were on Buena Vista near Sable Chase. ???????????? Similar to hostas only the one near the house is a GIANT. Click on picture for a closer look.

Re: WHAT ARE THESE PLANTS

My first thought were they look like lilies! The stalks on lilies that is. I have several in my back yard in clusters.

I doubt if they are in the lily family but that's what came to mind!

Easy osh. I'll bomb on the next one. And nanci don't lilies have blooms? The plant next to the house is approximately 4' tall.

I assume you're talking about the ones growing close to the ground, they look like some type of cactus, but I'm no horticulturist.

Lilies do have blooms but not all the time - right now, my lilies are dormant but will probably bloom again before the season ends.

Never saw a lillie that looked like those. Some form of cactus is probably a good bet.

It is called a "Century Plant" which is it's common name. It's formal name is "Agave" and it is a succulent plant that has large fleshy leaves with sharp points. The plant is called a century plant because of the long time the plant takes to flower but the plant only flowers one time and then dies. The flower stalk will shoot up in a matter of days to a height of 25 feet. I have three of them in my landscape. I did have a chance to see one of these plants in the Village of Alahambra that grew the flower and then died. Nature is amazing!

Well I'll be. Wonder why the man upstairs or the local horticulturist designed such a specie. Kinda like salmon. Flower once then die.

Thank you for the lesson. Most interesting

Here is a site where you can read up on the "Agave"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave

We have found with ours that they will grow baby agaves so we do have to pull those out of the ground in order to keep the main plant looking nice and neat.
