Home Surge Protection
Would like some opinions Pros/Cons regarding Surge Protection in our New Village Home.
Is SECO Good? Understand they install device on outside meter that protects major items and give you three other protectors to install where you wish in the home. Then you pay $5.95/Mo. rent fee or pay up front approx. $400.00...................... OR : Do I use electrican to install an entire Home protection device and pay their fees? Names and opinions please! |

I asked my builder the same question on the walk through of my house here in TV the morning of the closing. He recommended having SECO install the whole house surge protection because they can install at the meter, which he said is the best way to do it. I don't know whether an electrician can install at the meter. When I had an electrician install whole house surge at my house in Atlanta, he did so at the main electrical panel.
I bought the unit from SECO because I don't like paying rental fees. However, the advantage of renting, I'm told, is if the unit is damaged by a surge, SECO will replace it for free. If you've purchased it already, you'll have to buy the replacement (or elect to start renting it). |
I was just looking into it myself.
If I were building a new home I would have that sort of device installed at the panel. The next time I have an electrician come to our home to do some work, I will have it done. We have a growing number of digital devices in our home. The number of those electronic devices will just continue to increase. |
We opted to go with the rental from SECO. I was informed by them, if anything happens to the unit they will replace it.

Seco will not I believe cover damages to your appliances TV's etc, they give a few indoor surge protectors.
Electricians I spoke to use the ones that are placed in the panel, I did mine myself very simple for those that are handy, add one breaker wire it to protector, done. 20 minutes About $35 at HD |
We rent the whole house unit, installed at the meter, from SECO. Damage to appliances, etc should be covered by HO insurance. Right?

This summer we had a lightning strike at our Li home that did no damage to our home. The townhouse that abuts ours lost their computer, stove, refrigerator and microwave. They had a whole house surge installed. In October we had another lightning strike here in TV with just 2 breakers tripping. Our neighbor lost his garage door opener and microwave. I would recommend getting it done by SECO or an electrician. Ya never know. |
