Question Re: Celebrities (Actors)

At one time we lived by a celebrity (actress) who shopped in the local stores; unfortunately she was constantly harassed by adults who would get excited when they saw her and fawn over her. It was impossible for her to eat in local restaurants without being interrupted.

Why do adults act like teenagers when they encounter a celebrity, especially actors? After all an actor is nothing more than a media product.

Beats me. I went to high school with John Denver...we lived two blocks from each other. I always thought he was a nerd. After he became a celebrity I always actied like some kind of nut in his presence. We kept in contact for many years. My husbands was always cool and unaffected by his celebrity. Me, I was a nut. Who knows? If I figure it out, I will let you know.

I am in awe of great scientists. I met Francis Crick (the double helix) and Jonas Salk and couldn't remember my own name.

It takes all kinds.

I wouldn't walk across the street to see some sports figures.

It is some kind of defect in my DNA.

Thank heavens Sweetie likes me.

I have known celebrities.....famous actors, famous politicians, famous sports figures, religious big whigs, etc.

In EVERY category, there are the good, bad and the ugly. For me it it about RESPECT....not about how famous you are or how much money you have.

My father taught me well. He treated a doctor and a janitor the same.

One of the things that I like when I meet people in TV is that people don't ask me what I did when I worked. They ask me where I'm from.

And I'm so glad I'm not a celebrity! :)

I saw Mike Wallace sitting at the beach. Thought I would have a little fun,

We lived in North Andover, MA, for many years, just a mile from Red Sox great Jim Rice. Our son played little league baseball with Jim's son, and if Jim was able to make a game (he was still playing then), he had to stand way out by the left field fence to watch so people wouldn't always bother him. He had very few opportunities to see his son play, and just wanted to enjoy it when he could. A few years later, Jim had retired and his daughter was playing in little league. She was a fabulous athlete, as was his son, and both were very nice kids when we knew them. At that pint, Jim was able to do everything a "normal" parent would do. He took his turn selling hot dogs in the hut, the whole bit. He still very nicely declined any requests for autographs or photos ops, though, explaining that little league was about the kids, not the parents (something too many parents seemed to not understand!). He was a very nice, sincere man.

They're really like all of us except they're in the public eye and on the big screen. I had a close friend who was the Nanny for a very well known actress and my friend helped her to get her life together in many ways, after knowing what she had to go through, I was grateful of my ordinary life. I think some people are just caught up in the idolatry of celebrities and think that they must live a very happy life , not true.

Not trying to put a political spin on this but watch the Julianne Moore film about Sarah Palin-- Game Change. True, Palin had a little bit of celebrity as the Governor of Alaska but as soon as she was put into the celebrity fish tank of the Vice Presidential nomination, her and her family's lives went haywire. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_2469001.html

There are lots of celebrities who could not handle the pressure and buckled spiraling into drugs, profligate sex, other forms of hedonism, insanity, and eventually suicide. The Palins have weathered the storm fairly well.

Not sure if I and my family could weather such a storm or would want to do this.

There are celebrities that try to work with their heightened awareness to do things that are very good for society and other people. Bono, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and many others.

Then there are those that take to a much more darker side and seem to use their fame for what I can only view as evil purposes like Charles Lindbergh and his fascination with the Nazis.

There was a time in history when acting (actors) were looked down upon as a degrading profession. What changed that outlook in part had to do with receipts as the box office. Money drives it and marketing creates a faux image Actors like George Clooney self promote. Clooney attempting to fool people into believing he is some sort of cross between Frank Sinatra and Bill Clinton. He may be an attractive male but he would make a lousy politician and he isn't even a very good actor.

I have never been in awe of anyone....grateful for and respected their accomplishments but never in awe

Wow, I did not know that about Charles Lindbergh! Do you know if there are any books written about it?

I just checked out Lindbergh Charles Lindbergh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia here. Fascinating!

I worked in broadcasting for years, and lived in LA and DC. Knew many of the "famous" folk. Some were wonderful, down to earth people. Some were jerks. Just exactly like real life! Bottom line is that they all put their pants on, one leg at a time, like the rest of us!

tpop1 11-16-2013 06:44 PM

At least....
