Christmas lights cut

On Tuesday, my daughter came to visit and said there were lights out in the bushes. I'm thinking bulbs, right? No, someone cut the wires to the lights in the bushes in several places. They even cut the plug off of one set.

So today I took them down. Spent the afternoon fixing what I could.

Did I mention these were all new lights. Yes, we just bought them this year.

Oh well. I think it's time for a security camera on each corner of the house.

Bummer, Jim.

Here's a similar recent thread ... note the posts where rabbits have previously been identified as the culprits.

I sincerely hope it was a rabbit and not a neighbor. Either way, not a pleasant experience.

I doubt it was rabbits. We had two nights where Christmas decorations were either removed or vandalized in our neighborhood. I think it happened to four homes. Some of the decor was found in a nearby park.

Wing-nut2, several weeks ago I sent you a private message about possible mutual acquaintances at FLETC. I'm wondering if you missed it or simply chose not to reply.

(The one whose last name I couldn't recall was Ken Keene.)

All of a sudden, there seem to be more wires being damaged by furry varmints in our area. First it was rabbits chewing on the wires to our outdoor lights, and now a neighbor has seen palm rats doing the same thing. He also had to call an a/c repair man because the outdoor wires were chewed. Dang varmints. Is there anything we can place on the ground that will discourage them from being around (ie) cayenne pepper, etc.?

Carl
Yes, I know ken.

I don't think it was a rabbit. No chew marks, just clean cuts. Some were too high for a rabbit to reach. And, I haven't seen any around the house.

I don't get on this board too often, so I may miss a PM.

When we lived in the desert we put moth balls around our motorhome to keep away the desert rats that were the size of a small dog. I assume that would work for these critters as well, but it sure does stink!

The biggest reason we didn't plant any palms here. We lived on the water in SW FL for 23 years, and neighbors always had problems with palm rats. We had to keep them trimmed up pretty well (the palms, not the rats), and we had a cat that frequented the pool cage...haha. According to the exterminator that was our advantage. They'll go where they can be not disturbed, if possible. We never had a problem, but many people did. They would get in the garages and even eat from the big bags of dog food left in there. Keep your palms trimmed up and AWAY from your house. Don't give them easy access to your roof, or they get up in the eaves and in your attic!

P.S. I realize I didn't answer any questions for you about the electric...:)...sorry, I am stumped on that one. Don't know what you can do besides treat for the rats, but that is by way of traps, and you will only draw them initially.

ronsroni 12-29-2013 10:41 AM

were the gardeners there trimming at all?
