American Hustle
 

Saw "American Hustle" with an 80-year-old neighbor. We both saw "Silver Linings" and were looking forward to seeing the Hustle stars Brad Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Though their performances were outstanding, the plot was so dry and boring that my neighbor actually fell asleep. Long movie with a plot that really doesn't go anywhere. Was not surprised to hear others in the theater trying to figure out the plot.

Great cast but a long, drawn-out plot. Kept hoping the movie would build into some sort of crescendo but it flat-lined.

Should've gone and seen "Philomena." Oh well....

I actually thought the plot was intriguing. Hard to figure out at times, lots of twists and turns, but I thought it was quite an interesting movie. Fireboy didn't like it though.

I did think it was extremely well acted.

Did you see it at Brownwood? Isn't that a great theater? I just can't stop raving about the theater.

I intend to watch it.

But I will wait till it shows up on netflix.

Barefoot: We saw American Hustle at the Rialto. But I do agree with you, the Brownwood is a really nice theater. Saw "Last Vegas" there....now, that was a hilarious and fun movie!

Husband and I saw it last Monday and thought it was great. Not much of a part for Jennifer Lawrence til after half way thru the movie but then she was terrific. Neighbors that saw it since liked it also.

We enjoyed the movie. Also found it somewhat difficult to keep up, but it all becomes clear by the end of the movie. That being said, I can see where some people wouldn't like it.

Agree. That is the way to go!!! If I do not like it I can eject it and get another one to watch.

Count me as a fan of the film. It is a complicated plot and you can't miss a line if you want to keep up.

A very cynical tale of con artists, greed and deception. I enjoyed seeing the fashions and hairstyles of the 1970's again. I thought the movie was a little on the long side. I would give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Just a note: there is a lot of profanity in the movie -- hence the R rating.

The acting was very good. We saw it at the Barnstorm Theater too. It is always a pleasure to go to the theater even if it is a bit of a drive from Lynnhaven. That's about the 10th movie I have seen down in Brownwood.

I just checked my list of films I've seen in TV this year, which is Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity in 3D, Captain Phillips, Prisoners, Philomena, Nebraska, All is Lost, Now You See Me, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Conjuring, The Lone Ranger and The Heat.

I had put off American Hustle but after last night's awards we went and saw it today. It is my favorite film from everything I saw this year. I really didn't have a problem following the story, the music and clothes were like reliving my 20's. I never found it boring and the ending was better than expected and I can't wait to see it again.

I also found Walter Mitty better than expected, I would highly recommend if you were someone who liked films like Benjamin Button or Forest Gump. Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity and Prisoners were the most intense, I really liked Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners. Nebraska I was disappointed with because the director Alexander Payne had directed my favorite film 'Sideways'. I'm also probably one of the few who liked the Lone Ranger, in fact I can't wait to see it again. My wife's favorite film this year was Blue Jasmine and until today mine was Dallas Buyers Club, so last night we had a couple of the winners picked.

I would like to see Walter Mitty because I read the story and was a huge admirer of James Thurber. I even liked the show "My World and Welcome To It", which was based on Thurbers writings, though it didn't last long. William Windom was the Thurber character, is I recall correctly.

The original Walter Mitty with Danny Kaye from 1947 was shown last week on TCM. In the intro on TCM by Robert Osborne, he made note that James Thurber was consulted for the film but his suggestions were ignored and he hated the film.

On IMDB (Internet Movie Database) website it seems the original movie has a lot of fans, but after watching it last week I have to say I thought it was terrible. That only made me want to see the new version even more. Maybe it was Danny Kaye, but in the original film he does an impersonation scene in a bar that goes on for several minutes and is horrible to watch. It reminded me of a poor version of a Red Skelton routine. The new film is really good and I'm not a big Ben Stiller fan. I would highly recommend seeing the new Walter Mitty.

Great ensemble acting and the period costumes & scenes were well done. It was generally about the Abscam scandal, but the audience was warned that it wasn't totally non-fiction right at the beginning of the film. Thought it was mostly hilarious and would see it again.

For me IMDB is pretty hit or miss. A lot of the movies they love I don't enjoy at all. I really enjoyed your other post in this thread. I found your reviews refreshing and unpretentious. It's nice to read (even amateur) movie reviews that aren't about the author's own self importance. Along with IMDB I like Rotten Tomatoes. I like that they have what critics think and what the public thinks separately and as you may have guessed they often don't agree :oops:
