Really? I really like Fenney Grill. I’m shocked to see so many people who don’t like it! Though, I haven’t been there in quite some time. It used to be owned and run by TV but maybe a year or so ago someone else took over.
I’ve heard really good things about the McCrackens Irish Pub in Leesburg but haven’t been there yet.

I heard the Windsors are cutting back on expenses. Seeing that I will not be able to stay with them, can I stay at your home? I'll buy you all the fish and chips you can eat! (just kidding!-One can only wish to be in the UK)

sdeikenberry 06-16-2023 04:58 AM

Lopez Country Club has decent fish and chips, as does Costal Del Mar in Spanish Springs. And believe it or not, Margarita Republic can have good fish tacos depending on the mood of the kitchen on a given night. That said, fish and chips is a bit like pizza...what you like may be different from someone else's likes.

WingedFoot78 06-16-2023 05:51 AM

I had Fish & Chip some months back at Evan's Priere(sp). The fish was great as was the fries. I do't know if it was a special or a regular item. BTW, what are mushy peas?

The giant Fish Fingers at Tierra del Sol Country Club are the best I’ve had around here. Who knew fish had fingers? Actually lots of the country clubs and fish restaurants have fish and chips, and I’ve never had any that were lousy. However, I’ve NEVER had in The Villages, or the US, for that matter, what I consider REAL fish and chips like I used to buy weekly when I was studying at Oxford. Here the fish pieces are too small, usually too thin, and the batter is wrong. The fish is served with FRIES, not CHIPS (no, I don’t mean what the British call potato crisps and we call chips) Usually the fries are good, and maybe English style chips would be sent back to the kitchen here, but I think it’s hard for American cooks to recreate something they’ve never seen or tasted. Let them spend a day in a good British chip shop and they could do it. But then they have to put a big scoop of chips on a couple pieces of absorbent white paper, put a big plank of fish on top, ask “Salt and vinegar?” then douse everything with lots of both at the same time. Chips arrive with vinegar already on them and soaking in. Never catsup or tarter sauce or anything else. I like tarter sauce just fine with fried fish, but I would never have it with real fish and chips. (Oh, and chances are the best fish and chips will be cooked by people from India or Pakistan, or somewhere similar, if you are in the UK.)

I'm lucky enough to be in the UK right now. Had dinner at the Golden Hind in London. Excellent chippy. Light batter, not greasy, and perfectly cooked Haddock.

Only place that comes close in TV is Havana. A true fillet of Haddock cooked perfectly.

Ptmckiou 06-16-2023 06:46 AM

McGrady’s (Scottish pub South of 44 at Sawgrass ) is fantastic. That’s my usual when I visit there.

Joe C. 06-16-2023 06:59 AM

I love fish and chips! A good cod or haddock dipped in batter and deep fried. Thick slices of potato deep fried with it. Doused in vinegar and tartar sauce on the fish.
No restaurant down here can compare with New England restaurants for fish and chips.
However, the best I've had down here was at Cheers over in Stonecrest. Too bad there isn't a Chelo's down here.

rickaslin 06-16-2023 07:08 AM

Good fish and chips

There is a food truck in Wildwood on Thursdays called "THE CONCH MAN" he has great fish and chips also a little place call "THE SEAFOOD SHACK " on 27 in Leesburg heading to Clermont ,both places are rel good.

Rzepecki 06-16-2023 07:13 AM

I’m really surprised no one has mentioned Miller’s Ale House. My Polish American husband is an “expert” on fried fish and says theirs is the best he’s tasted in our area. Friends that we’ve recommended Miller’s to have loved their fried fish also. It’s beer battered white fish. Lunch portion is just the right size. Dinner portion is so big you’ll take some home.

Barkriver 06-16-2023 07:15 AM

Try Bonefish. Pretty good, although I believe it is a beer batter or something similar.

Ellwoodrick 06-16-2023 07:27 AM

If you are willing to take a drive outside the bubble try Sundays in Davenport. South on 27.

Sundays Grill - Fish & Chips in Davenport, FL

TomPerry 06-16-2023 07:43 AM

Mallory Hill CC on Fridays has great Haddock and Chips on special and it VERY GOOD! Also Culver’s has REALLY GOOD North Atlantic Cod and Fries, either in a sandwich or a two or three piece dinner. I think the Culver’s on CR 466A is better than the one on CR 466 in Southern Trace Plaza..

Paula 06-16-2023 07:44 AM

Seafood reply

First, you don't have to go all the way to Cedar Key for Tony's - there's one in Mt. Dora. Then, if you want real New England seafood, check out Lena's Seafood in Silver Springs.

retiredguy123 06-16-2023 07:57 AM

I don't think anyone has mentioned Wendy's. I like their fries, and they have a good fish sandwich. Does that qualify as fish and chips? And, about half the price of most of these other places.

The very best I've had in The Villages is at McCrackens Irish Pub in Leesburg. The 2nd best is at O'Shucks in Wildwood. If you happen to find any that you think are better, let me know!

Lisanp@aol.com 06-16-2023 08:43 AM

I was brought the fried Haddock entree by mistake last night at Terra del Sol when I had ordered fried shrimp. I took the mistake entree because I had tickets to the show at The Studio and didn’t have enough time for the remake. I thought the fish was awful (the show was great). I do like the “fish finger” appetizer at Fenny Grill and you can get fries on the side (I don’t like their fries, however)

Mkgal612 06-16-2023 08:54 AM

Fish n Chips....the best....believe it or not "Culver's", batter is perfect, thin and

Culver's

rogerk 06-16-2023 09:03 AM

Check out McGradys at Sawgrass. They even have a sort of mushy peas-maybe not the real thing but better than nothing.

DeborahK 06-16-2023 09:14 AM

Best F&C are in Western Australia!

Hands down best F&C is Johnny's Fish Bar in Como, Western Australia. I search high and low everywhere I travel for a hit of this most wonderful fare and am mostly disappointed. Nova Scotia had some good stuff.

Mushy peas are disgusting and very British. We don't do it in WA but east side of OZ does.

Now locally in TV I find Culver's does a pretty decent job but there'd be no beer. Stay away from McGrady's Pub at Sawgrass, overpriced and well below average.

kbogli 06-16-2023 09:14 AM

Mckrackens in Leesburg makes nice light flaky battered fish and it is the best I have had in a long time, Cod.

frostola 06-16-2023 09:29 AM

The Clermont Fish House also has great sausage rolls and meat pies!

Does Johnny deliver to the villages? Mushy peas might be very British but this boy from Brooklyn has learn to like them.

Been there several times and have enjoyed their food so next time will try their fish. Thanks.

We like Miller's on 441, just South of Texas Roadhouse. Fish is good but chips, (fries,) are coated. They're good too, but just not the same.

Millers Ale House, 441, lunch specials.

Two Bills, I spent 8 yrs in England over 3 work assignments. I know a small part of the slang but certainly not enough to decipher your comment fully.

Huss/Rock salmon/rock eel/huss I have heard and we called sand sharks or dog fish.

Lillian Gish may be fried potatoes

Wally may be an insult or a large gherkin (dill pickle)

During one of my assignments, there was a surplus of farmed salmon and actually atlantic salmon was reportedly cheaper than cod. The Chippy's served a lot of salmon but I preferred the cod.

Interesting memories. I never got the nerve to eat conger eel that I know of.

Cheers!

Wally.........Large Gherkin.
Lilian Gish.....Fish.
Haddock and bloater.........Motor (car)
I don't mind fried eel, apart from having to keep spitting out bones, but jellied eels? barf
Cheers :beer3:

Usually with skin.
Never touch F&C's now, so things may have changed.
My dear wife is trying to keep me healthy, so grilled (broiled in US!) fish and no chips is the order of the day, usually with lots of green stuff!

The best fish and chips I’ve had recently was at Lake Eustis Waterfront Grille. It’s 40 minutes from my house in the villages, but well worth the trip.

Good Sausage rolls, really?

Ok, now I have to go there. A good sausage roll is hard to find. The ones at Meat Boutique in Mt Dora are terrible.

I'm at the point where I make my own. So good and easy to make.

For those who like thick batter deep fried mild white fish, without the fishy smell or aftertaste, Captain D's in Leesburg is a good choice.

Kind of strange to me to go to a fish restaurant for sausage roll
