Went to Athens tonight for the first time. Mrs. Bosox & I had the fish & chips and were very impressed.Talked to the owner & the fish is delivered twice a week by truck from Boston! Try it I think you'll like it!!

Bosoxfan: When I posted this back on Oct. 14th, I was surprised that there were few responses from anyone trying Athens Restaraunt fish and chips. I'm glad you tried it and would urge anyone who appreciates good fish and chips (haddock) to also give it a try. As a native Bostonian I knew you would have to enjoy this meal. Go Celtics?????
Oh, forgot----no NBA this year!!!!

My son sent us a care package from "legal seafood" a couple of weeks ago. A real treat. Also, the mrs & I spotted a place on 27 a while back, and I need to ride back down there(on the south side of leesburg ) and try it. It was called Boston Fish fry. Has anyone been there??

Anyone familiar with seafood in New Bedford or Fall River,Ma? Since New Bedford is one of the largest fishing ports in the country, we were brought up on fish and chips, scallops, fried clams, clam boils, etc. Seemed like every neighborhood in those 2 cities had a small seafood restaurant or Portuguese restaurant. Nothing like an order of Portuguese style fish and chips (fried and served with sauteed onions and peppers with a light red broth), a bowl of clam chowder, and a stuffie (stuffed quahog)! One thing I would love to see down here is clam cakes. The places we've been to serve hush puppies, and I bet they could figure out a clam cake. Now with that being said, We've found some really good seafood around here. We enjoyed the whole belly fried clams, shrimp and scallops at Sam St John on 441, and the fried shrimp and scallops at Fishermans Cove in Inverness on 44, are top shelf. Not like home, but pretty close. And just because their not like home, it doesn't mean not as good, just a little different. But like some have said, there's nothing like that cold water Atlantic haddock, and fresh cod makes for fish and chips every bit as good!

That sounds great but too bad their haddock is frozen from china. with the cost of fresh haddock being so high it's not affordable too bring in fresh from Boston.

At the beginning when they first opened you were right with this statement. The owner took the time to explain to us last night that his original supplier sold him fish from a company called Atlantic Fish but when he read the package he found that it was from Taiwan. He has since found a company that delivers fish from Boston twice a week to a restaurant in Miami so he hired them to bring his fish ! All I can say is it's as close to new England Fish that we've had in the 2 1/2 years we've been here!

"you's guys" just descriped Ye Olde English's fish cake . . . beyond anything you will find anywhere in the country. The fish is great and the potato coating is outstanding. When I was up in New England I'd drive 40 miles just go get to Woonsocket and have those fish cakes!

In this area you will never find a place which serves fish and chips like they do at Ye Old Fish & Chip in Woonsocket. Believe me....... The warm water fish they serve down here can't compare to cold water fish. The best fish for fish and chips is served in England and is called plaice. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Wish we could get it outside of Jolly Old England.

Where in Woonsocket? I'll check it out this weekend. Grew up in CF but never heard of this place.

Glenview CC has great fish & chips on Friday, including vinegar. Our favorite lunch place and Sunday breakfast menu.

We went to The Athens last night for the fish & chips and were pleasantly surprised. We both had the fish fry, which had a large piece of what the waitress told us was haddock with FF, opposed to the regular that has 3 smaller pieces of fish. Good batter, fresh fish, good cole slaw, good grilled bread, and all served hot by an excellent waitress at a reasonable price. Since this is the only thing we've tried there, I can't offer an opinion on the other food, but you can't go wrong with the fish & chips.

Agree that Sir Will's fish and chips at Bone Fish Grill is very good. They also have the malt vinegar. Reasonably priced as well.

Where is The Athens located?

We have never been disappointed by the fish and chips at the Lighthouse. It's our go to restaurant anytime we want fish and chips.

Re Fish and Chips

We just enjoyed a weeks stay on the LSV and our 1st meal was at the Lighthouse Bar & Grill... Even though I am not a big seafood person my husband and friend are, so I was willing to give it a try figuring I could find something to please my taste buds..I had the Haddock (breaded with their corn flakes and then fried) and it was Wonderful!! I can say this will be a place we frequent when we return and hopefully become Residents in TV:)
We were located in Cottages just off the Square in SL and able to walk to so many places.. I must give a plug for our Sales Rep Dave Pape and his wife Diane for setting us up in such a great location! "Happy New Year" to Everyone!!!

Had fish and chips at Bonifay the other day. They were very good. A little different, but tasty.

Captain D's

The absolute best Fish and Chips is found at Captain D's on 27 just after 441 branches off in Leesburg. The product is fresh, cooked to order, and excellent. And ridiculously low priced.
Enjoy!:bigbow:

I did too. Thought they were ok but kind of small IMO. I've had them at Beef-O-Brady's and thought they were pretty good. Would get them there again! Both places had vinegar too. :icon_hungry:

Lighthouse haddock is excellent. I tried Athens today and their fish is also very good. However, I really like the fries and slaw at Lighthouse. Bonefish served me some very greasy fish and chips the last time we were there.

I have to admit this post was more recent. I really like the lighthouse catfish platter. Yum.

I seldom eat fried anything, but the whitefish on Friday night at Orange Blossom Hills is worth the calories on an occasional basis!! So crispy and yet moist!!

My vote goes to Anstruther Fish Bar. Harry Ramsdens in Inverness was good, but Anstruther's was better.

brandy 02-26-2012 11:57 AM

bad news

Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley no longer exists. They went down hill over the last few years and where going out of business(just this one I think as they are all run as franchises now) The good news is that the place has been taken over by a smaller chain called the Wetherby Whaler they keep up the tradition though there fish and chipa are very good:mmmm:

BritParrothead 02-27-2012 05:20 AM

Oh what a shame!! I remember going there a child, the chandelier and grand piano were something else!!
We do have a Harry Ramsdens here in Bournemouth, ok, but not as good as Guisley. Our branch will even deliver the goods if you are ion the beach in summer!

scarecrow1 02-27-2012 01:41 PM
