Thanks so much for the tip. Never would have thought of them.

In another thread, some other people also mentioned Shanghai Chinese Food (352-751-1133) up in the Mulberry Grove Plaza. I have been looking around for a while for a suitable take-out place. Bamboo Bistro and Koyame probably came the closest.

From now on, Shanghai is where I am going for my Chinese-take-out fix. The ingredients are fresh and well prepared. The egg rolls are just a tad short of my tastes, but I am enjoying everything. It's a bit of a drive for me, but it's worth it.

It is better than a buffet as they only cook as needed and the food turns over fast. Their honey walnut shrimp are terrific and the lo mein is the best around. You can order whatever you want and the prices are reasonable. It is sit in or take out so you aren't dining as such but the food makes up for the lack of atmosphere. I haven't found any really good buffet yet in TV. JMHO

You should know! We like Evergreen, and I particularly like their hibachi. Have you gone there, and what is your opinion?

jblum315 11-23-2014 01:46 PM

Evergreen is the same as the Chinese at Colony, which is terrible IMO.

Ichiban is excellent. We went again on Friday. They had a Grand Opening banner out. It's located in front of the Lake Square Mall on 441 and Radio Road. Their address is 10301 U.S. 441, Leesburg, FL 34788. Their website is Ichiban. We've tried them all and this is a standout for us.

Have you tried China Lee in Ocala buffet? I'm not an expert on Chinese food but one of the clubs I belong to goes there often.

TNLAKEPANDA 11-23-2014 06:33 PM

So the answer is no good chinese here???

Indydealmaker 11-23-2014 07:19 PM

I would consider "here" to be anything from Crystal River to Ocala to Orlando and everything in between. Before The Villages, we never gave it a second thought to drive across Indy or Louisville or wherever for dinner. A good restaurant is a destination in and of itself. No pain. No gain.

lightworker888 11-23-2014 08:47 PM

China Lee

I don't know China Lee. Where Is it? We have been to the Ocean Buffet which wasn't bad but don't know any other Chinese restaurants in Ocala. I think we tried Shang Hai a few years ago but can't remember much about it. I think it must have been OK but not anything special or we would have used it again, though it is far from us. Once we found Panda Express we haven't tried any others recently. Btw Ming Court on Orlando is terrific. We go there for Dim Sum and that is a treat.

Yep, pretty much so.

PaPaLarry 11-24-2014 06:46 AM

Always liked it when we were able to go to Chinese Restaurant where they made their own Egg Rolls from scratch, at the restaurant, and not frozen. Right now we buy the frozen, but not even close!!

Here is their website...........CHINA LEE BUFFET | Restaurant Takeout | Order Food Online
I've only been there once and liked it but as I said I'm not an expert on chinese food.

texasfal 11-24-2014 07:18 PM

Tried Shanghai in Mulberry based on this threads opinions. Sorry, I thought it was mediocre at best. Had Kung pao chicken. I asked for extra spicy and they gave me some pepper paste to add myself. I asked for white meat only and was told they wouldn't do that. I ended up with 4 pieces of dark chicken and the rest was big chunks of celery, carrots and green peppers. Should have called it very bland Kung pay vegetables. The egg roll was OK but cold. Konami here I come.

Ecuadog 11-24-2014 09:56 PM

Konami? Where's that?

texasfal 11-24-2014 10:19 PM

Darn spell check! KOYAME...

kcrazorbackfan 11-25-2014 09:04 AM

The wife and I finally pulled into "Paradise" yesterday about 11am after being on the road for about 20 hrs total, grabbed a couple of hour nap and had takeout last night from Koyame. We had seen several positive reviews on them and the food was really good. I had General Tso's chicken and the wife had Pad Thai. Ahh, the journey begins.

BeetleBailey 11-25-2014 10:26 AM

We agree! We have lived here over 11 years and we feel they are awesome. Great food and great service. Koyame 750-9983

if you are interested in dimsum, you dont have to drive to orlando to get it. bamboo bistro serves it. sometimes they have coupons for it too.

lightworker888 11-28-2014 08:11 AM

There is no comparison in dim sum between Ming Court and Bamboo Bistro. One is handmade and the variety is outstanding. We did go to the Bamboo for dim sum and had a ladies lunch there too, when it first started serving it, but it really is worth the drive to Orlando if you know and love dim sum. If I had a dim sum hankering and couldn't get to Ming Court, then I would be happy to go to Bamboo, but given the choice, I would plan to make the drive to Orlando for dim sum and eat Italian while in TV at Il Confessore. There isn't a good Chinese restaurant anywhere close to The Villages, period. And please separate restaurants from buffets. Buffets, be they Chinese, Mexican, Country style, or the God awful seafood buffet are the worst culinary presentations in the industry. They are a way to maximize profit while serving an inferior product. Any Executive Chef anywhere, including the big time chefs on TV, and here in The Villages that offers you a buffet is selling out his/her profession, and putting profit above quality. And I know many people like buffets, BUT how long did that fresh tray of food sit on shelf in a kitchen before it was brought out on the line? Just a thought.

Same here from a Chicagoan who also loves Chinese food!

Richard1366 01-05-2015 11:31 AM

You have to go to Orlando to get quality Chinese food...scallion pancakes, peking duck, pigs ears, and a variety of dim sum from carts...

Many of the buffets also let you order a meal if you don't want the buffet.

OFF TOPIC ALERT

Does anyone cook Chinese better then what's being served? Can you share any secrets, websites or recipes? I know how to google for that sort of information who I want to hear from is someone that "woks the wok" not just "talks the talk".

sallystew 01-05-2015 12:03 PM

We have never found a good Chinese restaurant in The Villages.

Skip 01-05-2015 02:24 PM

The Gourmet Club's Facebook Page just announced that the new Asian restaurant in Ocala received 14 1/2 Stars (out of 15) from two members. Wow! Sounds yummy! Gotta try it.

KOYAME gets my vote too. Great, clean restaurant with some of the best fried rice I've had.

The best dish they have there to me, and I have tried a bunch, is the Mongolian Beef. The house fried rice is also fantastic.

llaran 01-07-2015 08:23 AM

Good Chinese food is an oxymoron here -- Koyame is is the best of not so good -
we had a great thai restaurant - Siam Orchid but it went out - evergreen is OK
