I like the sushi at Sakura. Also for those of you that say the food was bland at Thai Ruby it's because the clientele from the villages usually like it that way.If you ask they'll spice it up .I ask for a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale of hotness and find it fery tasty.I usually get the pad thai shrimp & enjoy it immensely

Agree Thai Ruby will make it anyway you like if you have any questions the owner is usually there she will explain how the food is prepared and the ingredients, ask for Mai.

I would never go to Golden Corral...went there once in Pennsylvania fifteen years ago and that was enough. I am not interested in quantity but rather in quality. And no, I have been to many restaurants in NYC's chinatown and there was no ambiance but outstanding food.. Believe me, I wanted to like Koyame, but the food was just OK. Restaurant opinions are very subjective and therefore all over the place. However I don't get the relevance to Golden Corral????

I used to go to Chinatown in NYC frequently. Still do occasionally. I have my favorites. Even Chinatown has some stinkers. Used to go to a little place in a basement on Doyer St. It changed hands and I didn't care for the food with the new owners. Looked around for something comparable and found it a short distance away on Pell St. The folks who had owned the place on Doyer opened another restaurant about a 5 minute walk from the old place. Used to pick up pork buns at different places for breakfast. Good eats.

Did you ever go to Hong Fats? This was one of the most well known noodle places in Chinatown. My now husband was a musician and worked until four AM. We would then drive to HongFats which would be absolutely jammed with musicians, actors etc etc. the waiters were rude and the noise was deafening but we had the best noodle dishes I have ever tasted. I don't know if they are still there, but they were a legend. Oh, those were the days!!!!

Sorry to say, Hong Fats has been closed of many years, since the 1980s at least. I think it was on Mott St. along with about 100 other restaurants. :-)
I don't think I ever ate there but could be wrong. There are so many restaurants I'm certain I don't remember half of them. I used to work downtown and Chinatown was a frequent place to go for lunch. Good food and good prices. I often went with a couple of Chinese gentlemen I worked with. We'd go to places most Americans never try. Everything was written in Chinese. My friends would order and I'd trust their judgement. I learned to never ask what I was eating until I finished the meal.
Good times. I could go on and on about my experiences in Chinatown, one of my favorite neighborhoods in NYC. Hmmmm, maybe I'll go down there for lunch tomorrow!

Going to NYC this weekend with our kids, who used to live in Brooklyn. They want to go to Chinatown for some shopping. Can you suggest a good restaurant in the part where all the you-know-what stalls are?

Shanghai Café,
69 Bayard, 69 Bayard St (what a coincidence) which is off Mott St.
Big Wing Wong,
Peking Duck House
These are all on Mott St. except 69 Bayard.
My old favorite at 10 Pell St. changed hands and names. There's still a restaurant there but I really didn't care for it with the new owners.
These places are all near the typical Chinatown shops. Actually pretty much all of Chinatown is near these shops.

If you're not used to Chinatown be prepared for massive crowds. That's just the way it is there.

Oh, and PS: been there, done the crowds, love it. Especially when the word gets round that the authorities are about to come through, and everything mysteriously shuts down. My dil and I take small wads of cash and leave the purses at home. It'll probably drive my husband nuts, but oh well.

Maybe it's me, but you lost me here.

The area around Canal St. has some storefronts that sell knockoffs. Or "brand name" items that aren't the genuine thing. They get raided periodically. You have to be careful from whom you are buying.

Ah yes, Canal St., home of the Sako and Roullex watches. :-). Actually the whole area around there is full of these junk shops. Even Little Italy. Mulberry St. is pretty much the same as Chinatown now. A lot of the great Italian restaurants are gone. Nowadays when we want good Italian we go to Arthur Ave in the Bronx.

Another tip. Thanks. I just don't get up there enough to keep up. We used to have wonderful Italian just walking into a place we would happen upon.
