Default Lunch at Too Jay's & Brooklyn Water Bagel

When I visited The Villages earlier this month, I had the matzo ball soup and shrimp salad platter at Too Jay's in Lake Sumter Landing. Delicious - A+ Wish Too Jay's was here in the Chicago area.

Also wish Brooklyn Water Bagel would open in the Chicago area. Love the Brooklyn Water Bagel on 441/27. Had my favorite bagel and salmon cream cheese there during my recent visit. Great coffee there also.

I was disappointed with the Sumter Too Jay's the last time we went in the last year. The pastrami was too thickly cut and the sandwich wasn't grilled, as I had expected it to be (since that's how they used to do it years ago). I think they just used boiled pastrami and toasted the rye.

Matzah Ball soup at Toojays is mediocre and it sure doesn't go with shrimp salad.

In your expert opinion does a bagel and cream cheese go together?

Check out Einstein Bros. Bagels on Meacham Rd. in Schaumburg. As good as if not a little better.

FYI: Too Jay's food most of it is prepared at their central location, frozen then delivered to their many locations throughout Florida.

Just passing on information. Many of the restaurants in the Villages serve prepared dishes that are frozen elsewhere.

Deli meats don't get frozen though, neither does swiss cheese. Maybe it comes pre-sliced, but if you say you want grilled pastrami and swiss, it needs to actually be grilled, not just boiled and tossed onto bread.

Too Jay's matzo ball soup and shrimp salad works for me...that's how we roll in the Land of Lincoln.

LOL . . .Einstein Bros. Bagels on Meacham Rd. is my usual lunch stop after church on Sundays. I have Einstein's app on my phone to get points for free food. My usual is the turkey sausage and cheddar on an asiago or 6 cheese bagel.

As a snowbird, originally from Chicago's western suburbs I would love to see a Portillos in the Villages! Love McCalls, Demshars, Carabas, country clubs ect. But sometimes you really just want a Portillos dipped beef!
