I don't order a baked potato but I can't imagine how anyone could make a baked potato any better. It's just a potato that's baked. And I doubt that any restaurant is going to discontinue an item because of the demand. If there is that much demand they'll usually raise the price. If anything, items get discontinued because of lack of demand. Where did you get the information that they discontinued their baked potato because they couldn't keep up with the demand? That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I didn't like the fact that they only have baby back ribs. I like the bigger ribs. I also like corn bread which Oakwood doesn't offer. Their garlic toast was almost mediocre.

It'll be Sonny's for me from now on.

If you went to the Oakwood Express, it is a more limited menu than the one on 441. I don't like it as well, either.

Oakwood has good ribs but the beef is as bland as grandma's boiled roast.
No smoke ring and machine sliced. The side dishes are weak too.
I guess you all ain't from Texas.

Oakwood is the closest thing to Texas BBQ that I have found since moving to FL in 2004 from Amarillo. I get the ribs and chicken breast combo, and usually with the blackeyed peas (wish they were fresh ones, not the dried and then cooked ones) and fried okra or mac&cheese. Sure tastes and smells smoked. I bring the chicken breast home, take it off the bone, and use it to make an awesome smoked chicken pasta dish. :icon_hungry:

Nope. went to the one on 441 in Lady Lake. Was not impressed. I prefer Sonny's.

I agree. Oakwood not only has succulent, falling off the bone ribs with sweet and tangy sauce, but the sides are wonderful. All day cooked green beans with ham, ditto the lima beans and the baked beans. The baked potato is cooked just right and served with butter and sour cream. The slaw is yummy too. Their help has been there as long as we have been here and are dependable and good. Not much to look at as far as décor but yummy, yummy, yummy.

ColdNoMore 07-25-2017 04:22 PM

I'm actually surprised by those who didn't choose Oakwood...hands down.

Why? I like Sonnys. Their ribs are good and I love the pulled pork.

To each his own. I prefer Oakwood. We have different "tastes" and perhaps that is why there are so many different restaurants.

My husband and I hate Oakwood. Think we are the only ones!!!!!

perrjojo 07-26-2017 06:02 AM

If you want REAL barbecue, try I Barbecue on Hwy 441. I don't care for Oakwood or Sonnys though Sonnys is a great hang out spot.

Oakwood is our favorite, by far! We always order our baby backs well-done, because the sauce carmelizes. Warning... they look a bit burnt, but this is how we think they're best-tasting... burns off a bit of the fat, too.

Now I've only been to one sonny's in Ocala and the express. Based on my experience I agree.

I can not remember the name of the restaurant but try the BBQ place on 42 near the RR tracks.(near 301)

Oakwood vs Sonny's

Has anyone tried I-bar-b-que on 441 in Fruitland Park? It's family owned and delicious! Much better than Sonny's. I haven't tried Oakwood yet.

I have not been there, but I talked to a couple, who are both certified KCBS BBQ judges, and they recommended it, especially the brisket.

Oakwood is better than Sonny's but Artman's is better than both!

I LOVE OAKWOOD and love it's sides; Lima beans cooked with ham, ditto, the green beans, good slaw.

I agree. I especially like the lima beans, which I don't have that often..

logdog 09-20-2017 03:51 PM

We don't care for Sonny's or I BBQ. Woody's is good but Oakwood has been our favorite... until today. We tried Artman for lunch and they are better than Oakwood. Great smoke on the meats, homemade sides, best mac & cheese ever. Not very expensive when you wind up taking a big box of leftovers home.

Tweety Bird 09-20-2017 07:54 PM

Oakwood is awesome!

Kerry Azz 01-17-2018 07:43 PM

Don’t forget the corn fritters.

Artmans is the best most authentic BBQ in the area.

Ate there last night and they had baked potatoes. No comparison to Sonny's.

tedquick 01-17-2018 09:53 PM

I'm at Sonny's at least once a week, but only because they're golf cart accessible. While they're pretty good I STRONGLY prefer Oakwood.

Still not on their menu. Maybe it was a baked Sweet Potato.

What does no comparison to Sonny's mean? Sonny's better?

Judgement of the consumer prevails.

YOU should have had the baby back ribs. I think it is much better than pulled pork.............Oakwood is far better than Sonnys.

Green beans are really, really, good, cooked low and slow with ham. Lima beans are yummy. They DO have baked potatoes and they are done right. I don't like the Texas toast either, but bread isn't high on my list. The corn salad is good.

Try in ONE more time and get the baby back ribs, the green beans and the baked potato. Go in NOT high season on Sunday. The baby back ribs are on special. There is a reason it is hard to find the parking space.

I certainly know the difference between a baked potato and a sweet potato. They aren't on the menu. All you have to do is ask for one.

l2ridehd 01-18-2018 08:27 AM

Tried them all and neither Sonny's or Oakwood makes my list.

Sully's Smokehouse in Leesburg is the best around.

I Barbecue in Fruitland park is really good

Altmans on 42 in Summerfield

Than way way down the list is Sonny's and Oakwood.
And below that is Burkes.

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 01-18-2018 08:55 AM

We ate at Sonny's last week and it wasn't very good. They changed their menu to offer fewer choices and the ribs were overcooked.

Next time we'll try I Barbecue.

Sorry Gracie, but I don't go to a BBQ place for beans, green or lima. Baby back ribs and ham are also not big on my list either. I want big meaty ribs cooked right with good spicy sauce.

It sounds as though you prefer the beef ribs over the pork ribs. There are also pork spare ribs which are not as tender as baby back ribs. Those beef ribs are delicious!

Personally, I say that Oakwood is THE place to go for baby back ribs and Sonny's for pulled pork.

You should listen to me.

I could just order the green beans........OR the lima beans. BABY back ribs are falling off the bone tender, succulent, seasoned just right and cooked low and slow and served with your choice of barbecue sauce. It isn't a beautiful place but the help has been there for years and are good at cooking. They are a small group of restaurants I think. Maybe four total? When the one on 441 is very busy....we just drive way further down 441 and it isn't busy.

In a BBQ-if meat falls off the bones--you lose, I had a neighbor in NC who was a judge in BBQ competitions

I don't care what the judges say........I like my pork tender. Maybe not falling off........but coming off after a gentle nudge or two.

To each his own.

fishon 01-18-2018 01:43 PM

Pork ribs and Beef ribs should be firm enough to bite off the bone, as already stated by Chatbrat.
Altman's has the best brisket I've had since moving here from Texas.
I enjoy Memphis sweet pork BBQ, North Carolina mustard and vinegar pork BBQ and Texas Beef BBQ.
It's really too bad so many posters have such a poor understanding of smoked meat.
To each his own. Enjoy your beans and potatoes. I hear they are prepared to perfection in Wisconsin.
