Oktoberfest night tomorrow at Taverna Red
Stopped into Taverna Red (on 441 just north of TV) and noticed they’re having an Oktoberfest night tomorrow with German beer, food, and entertainment. Just in time for me to get a Wiener Schnitzel fix.

wiener schnitzel
Ed, we would rent houseboats and cruise the canals in Europe. On a couple of our trips we spent 2 weeks in Holland and 2 weeks in Belgium. I had wiener schnitzel almost everyday! Strangely enough, Spaghetti Bolognese was served everywhere also, so I had a lot of that too.... almost heaven

Gracie, I don't know what they serve with it in Germany or Austria, but where we were, it was usually offered with fries, (frites in Belgium, calling them french fries was almost an insult) or potato salad. My wife and friends would occasionally get veggies. Personally, I had the Bolognese, since I'm a pasta lover.

But it has to be GERMAN potato salad, which is different that the typical American potato salad.
German potato salad has a vinegar base; it is delicious!

I know how to make that for sure. It has fried bacon, fried onion, warm potatoes, vinegar, and a little sugar. YUM>

When in Germany, I always had spaetzle with snitzel. I had to look up the spelling.
Spaetzle [SHPEHT-sluh; SHPEHT-sehl; SHPEHT-slee] Literally translated from German as "little sparrow," spaetzle is a dish of tiny noodles or dumplings made with flour, eggs, water or milk, salt and sometimes nutmeg.

Not to stray too far from the once a year German food at Taverna Red....
But, we ate at the Schnitzel Factory up in Ocala last Saturday ... very authentic, great schnitzels and other main German dishes. Sides included warm potato salad, red cabbage, and spaetzle. Desserts were apple or cherry strudel and black forest cake. Everything was delicious and portions were large. Highly recommended (and we had a German food expert with us). They are having their main Oktoberfest celebration this Saturday (the 16th) and it is sold out. Other than that, check it out anytime for good German food.

Ironically, the real Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany is from 9/18 ~ 10/4, so it's been over for a couple weeks now. Not sure why they didn't call it Septemberfest ???
We decide to not go this year, since it's almost impossible to get into the beer tents. They don't take reservations and the tents are normally full to over-capacity by 11:00am. Your alternative is to wait in line, one person leaves, they let one person in. The only problem...once they get in, they don't leave! Prost! |
