Southern tradition: pork, black-eyed peas, kale

Exactly! We are from across the river in Warsaw and we always have pork, black eyed peas, and greens (turnip greens and kale). I have always heard that the black eyed peas are for luck and the greens are for money. I'm not sure about the pork, it just taste good with the greens. :mmmm:

For us, it starts with lentil soup for health, then pork for tradition, then black eyed peas for happiness, and collard greens for wealth.

I was raised on the PA Dutch tradition of pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. But this year I made pork green chili and we'll have tamales. I was told to eat pork on New Years Day because a pig roots forward, if you eat pork, you'll have good luck moving forward into the new year. Happy New Years everyone! I hope you all get to root forward!

On top of the pork I have put one package of refrigerated sauerkraut, one peeled cut up apple, cut up medium onion and a half can of beer. On top I will place about a tablespoon of brown sugar. I will bake it low and slow for several hours until it is falling apart tender and serve it with mashed potatoes.

Mike Mason? What do they call the the sauerkraut/pork broth in Deutchland? I sort of remember the German word for it is something like brill..but I think that is a fish..

If I don't do this pork and sauerkraut cooking and eating then all of my German ancestors will see to it that I do not have a Happy New Year.

What is your traditional food today, on this first day of 2012????

Happy New Year everyone and twenty two hugs to each.

GG I don't want you to rush but what time do you want me over? I"ll even bring my own utensils.....wife too:laugh:

No special tradition for me, but with a forecast up here in Buffalo NY of 60 winds and lake effect snow, a big pot of chile is on my stove. Happy New Year to all my TOTV friends. Good health is my prayer and wish for you in 2012.

Blackeyed peas are a must in our house. My hubby already cooked one pot of vegetarian Hoppin' John and I'm ready to cook my version loaded with onion and bacon. A pork roast with kraut is in the crockpot and collards will be done later this afternoon. I'm counting on lots of good luck this year (at least I hope).

Oh no, never rinse your kraut(unless you really have to watch your sodium intake).

I switched to ham hocks. Same flavor without the teeth. I also do cornbread.

Pork loin roast, rubbed with paste of olive oil, minced garlic and dried rosemary - in oven for a couple of hours....served with black-eyed peas, collards and of course corn bread for sopping up all the goodness. Pardon me while I wipe the drool from my chin. Happy New Year to everyone!

well, looks like i might get to be the unluckiest poster on this thread! :undecided: no pork, no sauerkraut, no black-eye peas, no collards/kale, no mashed potatoes! am cookin' up a slow roasted prime rib roast and serving baked potato and string beans almondine along side. n.y. style cheese cake for dessert.

my father always told us that if it wasn't for bad luck, our family wouldn't have any luck at all. bless his soul - he is gone from us 40 years today - thankfully, he hasn't always been right! :icon_wink: the other good news is that one of my nieces is scheduled to bless the family with a new baby this summer!

That sounds wonderful!!! Too bad it's 5:30... what kind of pork roast do you use? I would love to make a meal like that. Do you think you could do that in a crock pot?
