after 40 posts the message is clear, food quality is inconsistent at best, not a recipe for success in my opinion.....GN

uujudy 12-21-2009 11:01 AM

Nooooooo! Golfnut, don't say that! Shhhhhh! I love our Sonny's. It's the only Sonny's that will let you order from the lunch menu any time of day! :icon_hungry:

MelZ 12-21-2009 05:44 PM

Thanks everyone for you comments and suggestions all have been passed on to Sonny's Management.

Changes for the positive are in the works and I am confident they will remain a positive force in TV.

Whalen 12-28-2009 09:14 PM

Two Thumbs Up

Just got back from Sonny's and I guess they underestimated Christmas week.
They ran out of Baby Backs!
You know when you have your heart set on Baby Backs there is just no substitute, well I settled for pulled pork. It was good.
Apparently one of the managers heard of my disappointment, stopped by our table and comped our meal.
We were both very suprised and impressed with the service and attention and just wanted all to know what happened.
This is a restaurant worth keeping.
As to the salad bar, I go to Sonny's for Baby Backs & BBQ.
If I want salad, I go to Crispers.

Thanks

Sonny's in Leesburg offers senior discount but not in Villages, not fair!..Would love Oakwoods to come on property!...My husband likes St. Louis ribs at Sonnys

Mustard based BBQ sauce???

While you are at it.....ask them to also include some good ole Eastern North Carolina BBQ sauce......vinegar based. Man that Eastern NC BBQ is good enough to make you slap yo momma.

Sonny's BBQ

While you are at it.....when you suggest they add mustard based sauce to their selection, please suggest that they also add Eastern North Carolina vinegar-based sauce. That Eastern NC BBQ is good enuf to make you slap yo momma.:D

I hope Sonny's stays in LSL!!!

Never had a bad meal at any Sonny's...but some have been better than others. Serving reheated meats seems to be epidemic in the food industry these days. Perhaps the management doesn't think people notice???

I tend to just not return if I get a bad meal as I'm sure most folks do. I hope the managment at LSL Sonny's takes these suggestions to heart.

Liked It

We decided to try Sonny's yesterday and were happy with the food and service. I ordered a full rack of ribs and the waiter said it would take about 14minutes which indicates it was not being reheated. In addition the service from "Jimmy" was excellent. We would go back..

zcaveman 01-02-2010 05:00 PM

I had bad ribs at Sonny's one time and it was the one in Belleview. I assumed it was because I got the end piece. Maybe it was reheated. Not sure. But I did return.

I prefer Sonny's over most of the other rib places around.

Although Buddy's in Wildwood was the best but he sold the business to someone who really screwed it up.

golfnut 01-02-2010 05:22 PM

mel, it would be interesting to know what the managers view was on our comments....gn

He was very interested in your comments and opinions.

I believe Sonny's is here to stay and I expect some changes to the menu in the months to come which should reflect that position.

Sonny's is going to be a sponsor of the Villages Vintage Car Club show at the Markets of Marion in Feb..

They are interested in increasing the take-out and catering side of the business. If you belong to a club maybe they can be considered for your events.

Finally, they are considering adding a salad bar to the LSL store, I don't think the final decision will be made on that issue till mid 2010.

Russ_Boston 01-03-2010 10:24 AM

I would imagine that ribs for the most part are always somewhat reheated since they 'smoke' for hours. But maybe they do enough business where it's coming right of the smoker on time.

Many 'famous' steak houses in a sense reheat all their steaks. Nowadays most steaks are 'sous vide' in bulk to a medium rare and then cooked to order/temperature under the salamander. How else do you think they get your order out to you in 10 minutes!

For an interesting take on this read the book "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain. Lots of restaurant secrets that you may not want to read.

Completely agree on the sauce choices. I think Oakwood offers both or at least one?

The addition of a mustard based sauce is under consideration also at my suggestion.

Apparently the more nothern locations have it, if you want it tell the LSL management you want it here.

Yes. you can get the mustard based sauce at LSL but it comes in a packet. I would prefer the squeeze bottle so I don't have to work at it. I need a lot of it on my pulled pork sandwich.

Sorry Sonny's

In a previous post here I indicated I would no longer dine at Sonny's. I went back on my word.

We have a weekly date for dinner with friends. Last time it was their turn to select the restaurant and they opted for Sonny's. We didn't want to rock the boat so we went along thinking maybe it was worth trying one more time. It wasn't worth it. Nothing had changed. Dry, overcooked food.

It was nearly empty at 5:00 PM but they were about full when we left.

I felt sorry for the staff. They were really trying to do a good job and being successful. I would give them an A+.

Oakwood may not be cart accessible but I'll endure that minor inconvenience. It is my kinda' BBQ restaurant.

So, sorry Sonny's. I wish you well and you will probably succeed without my business. There seems to be a lot here supporting you.

I noticed that too. I don't usually have the salad bar at Sonny's so it doesn't bother me so much that the LSL restaurant doesn't have one. I do love the bar, however, at the LSL Sonny's. It adds a very nice ambiance.

Sonnys

Myself and 3 friends were given coupons for a free domestic draft with a purchase of a sandwich. We golfed at Mallory and went there for lunch, we all ordered a sandwich and presented our coupons for a free domestic draft and requested Yuengling. We were told we can't have Yuengling. I reminded her it's a domestic beer and also the oldest brewery in USA. We asked to talk to the manager and he told our server he was too busy to deal with us. Mind you this was our first and last visit to Sonnys. Maybe that attitude is why it was 1/2 empty at 12:30.

Maybe MelZ can relate this story to Ken Kirkpatrick. (Now if he would have said "I'm busy but give them the Yuengling" it would have been okay.) I know Dick Yuengling, I still think he's making suds in the USA.

Oh, I thought you were going to say, "I know Dick Yuengling and the manager of Sonny's is no Dick Yuengling".

Just A Thought

For those who question why it is hard for restaurants to make it in TV, maybe this attitude will give a clue. Attitude cannot be blamed on high rent, etc. It's a "people problem".

P.S. We just got home from Oakwood this afternoon....great food, great people! We did make one observation while we were there and thought it humorous, to say the least. The only "young" ones in there were the staff on shift and those just coming on shift. Everyone else was "senior".

zcaveman 03-18-2010 05:37 PM

In my last few visits to Oakwood and Sonny's, I have to say that Sonny's has the meatier ribs but Oakwood has the bigger and more tender pulled/chopped pork sandwiches. Oakwood also has bottles of the mustard based BBQ sauce and friendlier and more available waitresses. At Sonny's you always have to flag a waitress down unless you go to the booth where they congregate.

And I do like Sonny's. It is cart accesable.

You comment has been sent to Sonny's management.

We went to Oakwood last week and had a party of 18 so we had to wait a little bit for our table. A bunch of us were waiting by the bar in the corner where you can see the kitchen, after we were there for about 10 minutes one of the cooks brought us a slab of ribs all cut up for us to munch on while we waited for our table....that's how a good restaurant treats their patrons....gn

I feel embarrassed because I forgot the owners name at Oakwood. I'll bet half the time I go there the owner stops by our table and chats with us. I'll bet I've had 20 or more free deserts from the owners. That is the way to treat patrons . I always bring new customers to that place.:clap2::clap2:

Sonny's

This is the ONLY Sonny's that does not have a Senior Special(Chicken $4.99 w/2 sides, or sweet & smokey ribs $6.99 from 3 to 5:00pm), when asked they said WHY in the Villages!!! We go to Leesburg Sonny's when heading south....Sonny's ribs are good but it is hard to beat Oakwoods.

Salad bar

I was having lunch at the LSL Sonny's. In the booth behind me

a meeting was going on between a Sonny's corporate mgr and

the local mgr. . They were talking about taking measurements

in the area where the "Salad Bar" was to be located. Looks like

the wishes of some posters are coming true.

Has anyone confirmed that Sonny's will be installing a Salad Bar? If so, what is the timeline?

Mel,
I know you had a meeting awhile ago and one comment that I should add that obviously needs resolution is the floor was filthy. When you see food on the floor obviously some sloppy customer has spilled it but there was enough help to tour the eating area with a portable carpet sweeper. My S.I.L refuses to go back to LSL because there was no excuse for it to be such a mess with a 3/4 empty restaurant. Also I remember the temperature being mentioned as another poster's complaint and we had to ask to move because it was freezing and that was after your mgmt. meeting. We're not complainers(honest)and eat out often. This was our 2nd visit there during our April visit. We liked the food but shortcomings still exist. We didn't need to use the restrooms but that's another major area for us. If they're filthy
We appreciate your efforts to get the problems resolved. If they have the salad bar in when we come down to close in July, S.I.L won't be with us and we'll give it another try.

One thing I hate in ANY restaurant is someone pushing the Bessel sweeper around when I am trying to eat. It irks me to no end. Maybe they could close off a section at a time and do the sweeping. If a bunch of pigs were extra sloppy, the bus person should take care of that with a broom and a dust pan when they clean up the table.

As for the bathrooms, I totally agree. A messy bathroom is a sign of a messy kitchen.

As for the A/C, in Florida you take a sweater or jacket with you into any restaurant as it is likely to be cold. It you are not near a vent, you are near a fan. That is not a Sonny-only problem.

PS: Never eat at Logan's. For some reason, they want you to toss the peanut shells on the floor
