Subway was a staple, because it is native to Connecticut. That doesn't mean it's a favorite or that I prefer it. It was just a common thing - the fast food of subs, much like a Fishwich at McDonald's is the choice for fast food fish sandwiches when you don't want the full treatment of a proper fresh breaded cod on toast with a side of crinkle fries and slaw at the seafood joint up the street.
There was no D'Angelo's anywhere near where I lived when I was growing up. We had the local pizzerias for our meatball subs, and mom for cold cut sandwiches. And the occasional Subway. That was the extent of my sub experience until college. At that point, we had local sandwich shops, and we had Subway. Subway had a sub club card, and they were fairly inexpensive. So that's what we ate.
Fast forward to after I graduated college and was still living in Brighton MA, and we had a local pizza/sub joint where I would get my subs. Genoa, mortadella, hot capicola, and prosciutto, on a fresh-made italian loaf, with the provolone on the top and tossed in the pizza oven long enough to melt the cheese. Then top it with lettuce, tomato, hot pepper relish, anchovies, and a drizzle of olive oil and a shake of oregano. You won't find THAT anywhere else, ever. So since I can't have perfection, and since I have to settle no matter what I do, I might as well go for consistent mediocrity. Subway is what it is.
Down here in the Villages, there's no D'Angelos. That'd be my first choice for a steak and cheese. Publix is my first choice down here for italian cold cut. But Subway is a good option for "we want fast food but don't want McDonald's." Usually get the tuna.
