This reminds me of a situation at a Perkins somewhere in Florida where an elderly guy was having an argument with the cashier. He felt he was shortchanged 10 cents, and the cashier was unable to open the computer-generated cash machine. The line kept growing and growing. Finally I gave him a dime and told him to leave. He left in his brand-new Cadillac.

I asked the cashier and the manager why they did not just give him a dime out of pocket. They said if they did, they would be setting a precedent. It happened too frequently, they added, even if they made correct change. It had to do with the failing memory, etc.

I either would have waited the extra minute or asked the bar person if I would be charged the non happy hour rate but that's me. That probably would have taken almost a minute.

Assuming people will do the right thing doesn't always happen. The bar person was following the rules and probably didn't have the power to make an exception.

I am a bartender and I would NEVER charge someone full price at 2:59 if happy hour starts at 3pm even if the computer couldn't figure it out, I would. Customer service is super important as a bartender and making people happy is part of the job. This bartender should watch Jon Taffer!

1) we were attending a show--intermission was 15 minutes
2) I do not wear a watch anymore and we left our phones in the car as a courtesy
3) the person next to me asked " when does happy hour start" -the bar person said 3 o'clock
4) I had no idea that happy hour started or they even had one
5) after hearing it started @ 3 , we got rang up @ 2:59
6) after the show went to Hemingways & spent $100+ and got happy hour prices on our Chopin

I always ask if I'm not sure.
Most bartenders would have said 1 more minute.
I know that many restaurants will not let you put in a happy hour price until it's time.

When is too early? Subjective for sure... but 1 or 2 minutes?

Everyone has to live by the rules and acceptable principles of society until a decision goes against one of those who wants to enforce each rule down to the microsecond. I do believe that if someone is critical about waiting for seconds at the mailbox and delays at the gate coming and going to their home that the difference of one minute at a cash register would be managed better.

In about 1970 I jumped in line in front of a smaller kid at a Father, Son event at our church to get my raffle ticket. A Giant Player Andy Robustelli was raffling off a football signed by the Giants. Lesson learned. The kid I cut off won my football. I've been basically chilled out since then. Get the point? Good!
