Question to other snowbirds who are watching Irma's progress from afar. Firstly hoping everyone that remains is hunkered down and safe. Wondering if any of you seasonals have been thru this sort of thing before? If there is damage to your property where do you turn? Homewatch suggests insurance company, which I get, but what about suggestions for reputable contractors who can get things patched up until we can get down there. Any advice would be most appreciated and hopefully won't be needed!

Insurance company will send an assessor to check the damage and he will give you a recommendation for someone to do the work. It is then up to you to decide whether to go with them or someone else. Our insurance assessors recommendations have always been excellent.

If there is a lot of damage here in TV. (I am here) then there will be enormous demand placed on every type contractor imaginable. The good, reputable ones will be the ones the full time (frogs) know about. There will be a ton of what I call "pick up truck bubba's" trying to defraud and take all they can. Before giving money to any contractor I would list their name on here and let others give input.

Thanks, since I won't be there, will pretty much have to rely on my Insurance company recommendation.
Our main concern will be making sure roof and windows at least temporarily covered if necessary.

During The Villages tornado on Groundhog Day 2007 about 1000 homes were damaged----over 100 houses completely destroyed. The Developer pulled his workers off building new homes to put temporary tarps on roofs that were damaged and rebuilt homes and repaired recreation centers and country clubs . One year later you could hardly tell there had been a tornado in The Villages. We were here and saw the destruction and the work of The Developer. Just two blocks from our Villa, homes were completely destroyed. About 50 residents were injured but there were no fatalities here in TV. This says something's about the quality of our homes. Whatever Irma brings we will survive and rebuild. Hopefully, damage will be minimal.

I believe Home Warranty, or some other department, has a list of approved companies. We did call them for something and right now I cannot remember what it was. Sorry. But, TV is great in these instances.

This was before my time. But I have often heard about the Developer's generous and timely reaction in mitigating the damage.
