We have always had a (very local) directory, compiled by a dedicated neighbor. Everyone’s name, email, phone and emergency contacts etc are included. Participation is totally voluntary, but it seems like no one wants to be left out. But now, what is new, at least to me, is that when people move away, into assisted care, or back home with children, they update their information in our directory so that we can continue to communicate with them.
We were playing Mah Jongg the other day, when one of us received a text from a dear past neighbor who is now in NC, and we shared her treasured words around. It was a delight! I remember getting encouraging phone calls myself after my husband died, while I was two thousand miles away, from my TV neighbors. How much it meant to me. Perhaps other neighborhoods might like to do it. We each pay a small amount for the paper and ink etc to the neighbor making the directories. |

Very nice idea! I especially like the idea of the emergency contact. Very many singles here, and if something happens to them, good to know who to contact.

We have a current neighborhood list with emails and telephone numbers. And we keep an alumni list of past neighbors so we can keep in touch.
