Our daughter Helene is really sneezing and reacting to the pollen present right now, even over medications like Zyrtec. We are going to look for room air cleaner/ purifier. Do any of you use them? Any suggestions as to what type or where is the best place to look?

Gracie, I am also very sensitive to airborne allergens, and I use a BlueAir model 503 with HEPASilent filters. The filters are very easy to change out every 6 months, and the air stays incredibly clean. The site below has good prices and free shipping. The intiial investment is high but for me it is worth it, and mine has lasted for many years.

Mike and I have two Gracie. One is quite old, but has a two part filtration system....an outer charcoal filter and an inner HEPA filter....an Enviracare. It's quite old, and quite noisy, but works well. Our newer one, a Therapure, is a quiet upright filter with an ultraviolet light. Our bedroom end of the house is SURROUNDED with bottlebrush bushes and all are abloom right now. The filters seem to help, but Mike still takes an antihistimine.

The old filter works the best....we've changed many a charcoal filter over the years....the HEPA filter, though quite expensive lasted for many years. A new one is currently in place, but finding replacements, hepa and charcoal gets a little more difficult as time goes by. We bought both as Costco.

Gracie,...You might also consider the filter system on your A/C-Heating system. I think most of the new builds in The Villages have the thicker, quality air filtration systems like Aprilaire or similar versions by Carrier, etc....If your system is just using the 1" thick fiberglass or pleated filters that you have to change out every couple months then you could definitely improve the air quality in your home by getting something like an Aprilaire.

I can sympathize with your daughter as I suffer from these allergies.

Gracie, These may be small or silly suggestions but these were a few things my alergist suggested to me over the years.

We buy local honey and eat one tsp. per day.

I wash my pillow cases every 2 days.

I shower before I go to bed and dry my hair so that there are no little green pollen pieces on my body.

Of course even here in NC my air is on.

We bought an Aprilaire whole house system, for our home in Illinois and LOVED it! It not only helped with hubby's alergies but kept the dust down in the house! The house stayed clean! I don't think it was too expensive and you only change the filter once a year! I did a lot of research with consumer reports before I bought it. I don't know if someone else has come out with a better system since then but I know it was considered the best then and really worked for him!

We have a room air purifier we bought at Lowes probably 10 years ago. Has a charcoal filter and a hepa filter. It's noisy but we don't run it at night. It's a Honeywell. Only use it in our bedroom. I keep all of the windows closed for the pollen season and shower before bed to get the pollen cooties off and it helps greatly.
