I watched it live yesterday on Fox 35, that race seemed to take forever. Two days, and then a couple of overtime finishes. It reminded me of 2001 when Dale Earnhardt was killed, the winner was celebrating and Earnhardt was killed on the last lap but the broadcast ended quickly without any announcements.

Ryan Blaney bumps Ryan Newman, who was leading causing him to flip, but Blaney didn't win, Denny Hamlin slipped by for the win which was his third Daytona win in the last five years. I'm sure he made Fedex happy as their sponsor and Toyota as well, and I just read that Hamlin made $14 million last year, so racing pays well.

I'm not a Nascar guy but watch the big races when possible. Look how far safety has advanced since the day Dale Sr. passed. It is truly amazing that this man survived this crash and I'm sure glad he did.

I had been noticing that before this big accident that all the other accidents somehow the cars managed to stay on the ground. As soon as any car turned sideways flaps opened all over the car and I guess the aerodynamics kept the cars grounded. I like it.

I just found this explanation on Google.
A race car's body is designed to optimize downforce, but if that body is spun so air is flowing in reverse, lift is generated instead of countered. The roof flaps' job is to disrupt that airflow and prevent lift. The decision to implement a safety device to keep cars on the ground came after two crashes in 1993.

Thank God that man walked out of the Hospital. 2nd worst racing accident I ever saw.

The worst one ever seen while we were there was Kalitta Killed in Funny Car Qualifier - YouTube Scott Kalitta. We enjoyed Raceway Park in Englishtown N.J. a whole lot but this accident soured us.

These Men & Women are smart, very smart and know the risk. How will Ryan Newman get back in a Race-car? If he does I give him credit. I don't agree with his decision but still give him credit.

Jerry Unser, Jr. from Albuquerque, NM, the city in which I was raised, died in practice for the Indy 500 in 1959. If anyone ever gets to "Burque" the Unser racing museum is well worth visiting. Welcome to the Unser Racing Museum – Honoring the Past…Preparing for the Future

As I understand it many of the safety features in modern vehicles were first tried and used in auto racing.

I saw Ryan's accident live on TV as it happened. That he survived at all is beyond amazing to me.

The reason so many people survive crashes in their cars today, is because of the safety improvement in all forms of car racing.
It may be a rich mans sport, but the knockon from it, goes right down the line.

Great news. Compared to what it could have been.
