This is a work in progress for access to information about support systems. Since 2000, I have been interested in getting libraries in FL of all types linked to the FL Victim Services Directory. http://myfloridalegal.com/directory. I have written many librarians in all types of libraries all over Florida attempting to get a link to this resource from various libraries' web-pages. There have been successes over the past 7 years with various libraries around Florida since 2000 but unfortunately this work has not had much of an impact in many areas. As I said, I have been at this since 2000 and had even tried to get many other states' authorities to look at this FL Directory and perhaps get something like this for their states' citizens. Started this work also in 2000 of contacting other states' authorities. You can see that I have not made much progress in this if you Google various library systems in the states of the US and see these library systems have links to their respective states' victim service directories if they even have one of these.

Hope some other Villages will get interested in this matter? Seems like a very useful thing to do with your free time? An easy way to look up various states' library systems is with this kind of resource. This one is for Minnesota-- http://www.publiclibraries.com/minnesota.htm I had written pretty much every library on their with a web-site and/or working e-mail address for Minnesota about this link for accessing information to help crime victims. I chose Minnesota because I had gone to law school at the U of MN and had worked in law librarianship in Minnesota at the U of MN as well as in public librarianship at the Minneapolis Public Library.

I had been interested in doing something about lack of access to practical information for crime victims after discovering this niche following the murder of my then high school English teacher's daughter Michelle M., in Reno, Nevada in February of 1976. This 1976 Reno, NV murder was actually on my birthday of February 24. I had tried to enlist public health officials from 1993 onward in doing something about this niche-- which was still very much there-- after taking part in a 17 week study at the University of California San Francisco Medical School as subject number 6 1 3. I have often used these two numbers (2 2 4 and 6 1 3) to tell my story about trying to push this matter of filling this niche into the limelight at the 5 schools (U Nev Reno, Brigham Young U, Denver U, College of San Mateo, U of MN) I attended while getting 4 degrees (BA, BA, MA, JD). I had tried to do something about this niche on and off from 1976 onward but met a lot of obstacles. Even wrote a bunch of politicians (Republican, Democrat, and Independent) in 1991 about this and matters related to my concern for this issue of doing something about this niche.

I could use more help with this matter and hope that Villages are interested? Some have thought that I could use some mental health help for being so driven by this matter, but that's another issue. It takes a Village to heal a survivor.

Had a big victory Tuesday February 5, 2008 in my massive 17 year + project of making crime victim information more accessible and visible through the internet. Been trying to make this happen for a long time.

Just checked this link at the U of MN Law Library and its goes though to useful information for crime victims and others interested in this area.

The U of MN Law School is my alma mater and where I worked (1988-1991) cataloging all the computer files on WESTLAW as well as on the reference desk and cataloging foreign language stuff.

This is important as some of the Minnesota public libraries http://www.publiclibraries.com/minnesota.htm, I had checked last summer only had a link to the U of MN Law Library as their source for legal information in MN.

Now, if I could just get Marion and Sumter County Library Systems to make links to the Florida Victim Services Directory http://myfloridalegal.com/directory. Have to often go back and check if library systems in FL still have the links they had put up due to my many suggestions from 2000 onward for a link to the FL Victim Services Directory as they have a tendency to disappear. I spoke to a Detective at the Pinellas County (FL) Sheriff's Department about this in late September of 2002. I handed him about 200 copies of snail mail I had received since 1991 about strenghtening the hand of victims in the legal game. He had said later that week in a phone call that the police had mixed feelings about arming victims and their family members with access to practical information. I guess it makes their jobs harder if you have victims and their family members and others asking a lot of questions and making a nuisance of themselves in the investigations.

Think it would make jurors less easy to manipulate too if you have citizens very much familiar with the workings of the criminal justice system.

It is kind of a problem when the people doing the victimizing may be the people who are also getting the information.

I have had a devil of a time since 1991 getting law libraries of all places to dialog with victim assistance groups about the needs of victims of crimes and their family members.

Tried to post copies of all these 200 or so letters on Findlaw's message boards in the Summer of 2002 but found myself a wide open target to just about every regular poster on these message boards. Findlaw is supposedly about getting people information about aspects of the law including Criminal Law. The letters did stay on Findlaw's boards that summer of 2002 though.

This may sound a bit big headed of me but in 1989 I returned to Reno, Nevada to attend the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) summer annual convention being held in Reno, Nevada that year. I had been cataloging all of the computer files on WESTLAW while working at the U of MN Law Library for a national project to allow library users to see what was on WESTLAW. This was like creating a card catalog record

for a computer file rather than for a book, record, video, etc. Someone else had cataloged the computer files on the other big legal research database--LEXIS-- at SUNY Buffalo.

Thought this WESTLAW opportunity as well as my former employer U of MN Law Library's Library Director M. Kathleen Price becoming Law Librarian of Congress around 1990 would allow me to push my own cause of helping crime victims.

Sort of an interest I had trouble submerging because of my connection with an infamous double murder which occurred around February 1976 in Reno, Nevada. Law enforcement in Northern Nevada had labelled this double murder one of the ten most notorious crimes in the 20th Century in Northern Nevada.

Boy, was I wrong.

Could not get a job in law librarianship after just trying to be honest about my having an interest in helping crime victims based on this personal connection to the events in Northern Nevada in 1976 and the subsequent history of the legal cases. Which ironically could be found on WESTLAW and LEXIS as Nevada Supreme Court cases. Woods v. State 101 Nev. 128, 696 P.2d 464 (1985).

The WESTLAW cataloging project died a quick death because of how quickly WESTLAW changes the parameters of its computer files and how many they add or subtract each year.

I kept on trying to convince librarians to get materials to help victims of crimes from outside the librarianship professions especially after receiving an August 1992 letter from the then Law Librarian of Congress, M. Kathleen Price, suggesting that I would need to get ALL law libraries on board if this were to be successful.

Something other TOTVers could do for others less fortunate. Talk of the Villagers probably are already aware of my attempts to integrate libraries into the social services providers array through links from them for survivors and victims of various kinds of crimes. I have been trying to get the Sumter and Marion County Library systems linked to the FL Victim Services Directory for the past few years. I started doing this activism for this particular resource in early 2000 after a Ft. Myers rape crisis center had informed me about this Directory in 1999.

Could you help out people who might at some point become victims/survivors of crimes or have family or friends in that position by suggesting that Sumter County Library System get a link here http://sumtercountyfl.gov/libraries/links.htm to the FL Victim Services Directory http://myfloridalegal.com/directory. Had done this on and off from 1991 through 2000 and even got a forgiveness of a stipend grant from the State of Nevada Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. (WICHE) http://wiche.state.nv.us/NevadaWiche.htm This grant had paid a good portion of my tuition at a rather expensive private school in Colorado-- Denver University-- towards my MA degree in Librarianship and Information Management. I got this MA in May 1984.


The State of Nevada WICHE voted to forgive my then 16 years of interest and the principal on this stipend grant on February 22, 2000 or thereabouts. I did not learn of this vote's outcome until September 2000 in a letter from Ron Sparks, II, Director of the NV WICHE at that time. Very stressful time for me in those few months from the vote until I learned what the vote was. The stress and other things were enough to cause a nervous breakdown in late March of 2000, a week in a Clearwater FL area mental health ward, and get stuck seeing a $10 a session FL government psychiatrist for about 19 months up through January of 2002. I was also stuck with a label of "paranoid schizophrenic" because that is what the psychiatrist Dr Sangita Desai said the book http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnos...ntal_Disorders said it had to be. I kept on telling Dr. Desai that nothing was wrong with me and she would just reply if you are OK you would not be coming to see me. So, I quit going.

The WICHE vote was because my work from various others states from 1991 through 2000 still affected the people in NV.

Just feel I still owe some people in Nevada for listening to my various pleas for survivors of crimes.

If any TOTVers are in libraries in Nevada, please check for yourself if that particular library has something useful for you if you were standing in the shoes of a survivor/victim of crime or his or her family member or otherwise significant person.

I had tried this exercise on and off in many NV libraries from late February 1976 onward from when I moved from NV in late 1984.

Have met a lot of former New York Staters here in the Villages as well as some snow birds who go back to somewhere in NY State. I have bugged librarians about this issue all over the world since 1992 or so but am just one person so I have not had that much of an impact on many libraries and their holdings in this subject area. I have had some but not as much as I would have liked.

I have found TOTVers to be compassionate people with sometimes strong opinions and no fear about stating these, so I hope that some TOTVers are interested in this.

I just wanted to make sure that this site was still on the FL AG General's web-site.

Getting links from local Villages' area public libraries had been a chore of mine a few years ago but the last I looked no Villages' area public library system had such a link. The Lake Library System did have one though.
