Wind Talkers set in the Pacific during WWII about the Navajo indian code radio soldiers.
We Were Soldiers a true story of a battle in Vietnam. The Memphis Bell an excellent movie about a bomber squadron. Pearl Harbor both a romance and war story. Platoon, Vietnam dark tale. Full Metal Jacket, another dark war story. Good Morning Vietnam, an excellent movie. Flyboys, also an excellent WWI movie. Enemy at the Gates, an excellent movie about Nazi and Russian snipers in WWII. Das Boot, German submarine story. Behind Enemy Lines an ok story of downed US pilot in Bosnian war. Of course, hard to beat Private Ryan or Band of Brothers!! |

Das Bot made me think of The Beast (1988), sometimes called The Beast of War. Totally different than a submarine, it's about a Russian tank fighting in Afghanistan. The similarity is they're not American military, they're confined to a small space, very small tank, and it's kind of us against them being outnumbered. The guerilla fighters in the desert. It's very compelling and somewhat like the movie 1917, in the fact as soon as they get out of one predicament they're into another. I just saw on Directv that The Beast will be on the Sony Movie Channel Monday June 22 at 12:30pm. Last edited by John_W; 06-10-2020 at 08:50 PM. |

Big Fan of Band of Brothers
I read the book "Band of Brothers" before the series came. Not only did I watch every episode but I bought the DVD set and nearly all the books written in the aftermath from Major Winters, Lieutenant Compton, Sgt Malarky, Sgt Guarneare, Pvt. Hefron..
One funny story: After the war Pvt. Hefron and his brother (a sailor who served in the Pacific) sat down with their dad and started telling war stories. Hefron said "I had a German General surrender to me, at which his dad and brother said "can't take this much BS" and the conversation ended. As the TV series was airing the episode came up where a German General surrenders to Pvt Hefron. His phone rings and it's his brother. He says, "You really DID have a general surrender to you!" |

Anthropoid (2016) - Rotten Tomatoes
Saw this at the Barnstorm Theater here in the Villages. Quite an exciting true story even if depressing. Also really liked Fury. |

Battleground (1949) with Van Johnson and James Whitmore. About the Battle of the Bulge and made only 4 years after.
In Harm's Way (1965). Another with a cast of thousands but a good cover from Pearl to the Battle Of The Coral Sea. Not WWII but a real classic, The Fighting 69th ( pre war) with James Cagney, Pat O'Brian
