Rita Coolidge came up with the idea for the song, which was originally called “Groupies (Superstar).” People tended to make fun of the groupies that would hang around music stars and hope to have sex with them. Coolidge got to thinking about how they felt, compared to our perceptions of them. She told Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell about it, and they wrote the song. Bonnie and her then husband Delaney, as Delaney and Bonnie, released it as the B side of a 45 in 1969, with Eric Clapton on guitar. I guess I never thought about how many musicians it took to make that recording. The orchestra was incredible. The singer has a very nice voice, but nobody can touch Karen. Karen's vocals aren't just pretty in this song--they are haunting and filled with emotion. When I was a kid and was having a bad day, I would lie down with my head by my stereo speaker and my bad mood was washed away by Karen's smooth, velvety voice. It was like listening to an angel on Earth.
