This one helps me out a bit, written by the great Joan Armatrading back in 2003. It's also a reminder that all life, throughout history, is a challenge.

Joan Armatrading - In These Times - YouTube

"In These Times"
---Joan Armatrading

These are the times
Tears fill the back of your eyes
These are the times
The birds migrate
Across the skies

These are the times
What hope you had you forget
These wicked times
You're bound to feel
All sanity is lost

In these times everyone needs love
In these times do you pray to God
In these times everyone needs comfort
And would welcome a hand to hold
Compassion is the fire
That burns the hurt
That pains the soul
And though my eyes are so polluted
By the sight of lost desires
I can see you standing by

This is my fear
That distance will come between us
And it could mean nothing
Nothing
To get from here to there

We own the world
And everything that's in it
Let our love shine
Like glistening raindrops
Resting on a rose

In these times celebrate our love
In these times let's be thankful of
All the days we can spend together
And I'm happy to hold your hand
Your passion is the food
That feeds the hunger in my heart
And now my eyes are clearly open
No more longing for the past
Now I have you in these times

In these times everyone needs love
In these times do you pray to God
In these times everyone needs comfort
And would welcome a hand to hold
Your passion is the fire
That burns the hurt
That pains the soul
And though my eyes are so polluted
By the sight of lost desires
Good to have you in these times

Default Any Leonard Cohen fans out there?

Troubling times indeed, but may I suggest a song that is appropriate, yet hopeful — and besides, “it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.” (If you recognize that quote I just used, you might be giving away your age —although you could have been in your playpen or even in utero when you heard it.) Oh well, I digress — now, back to my song.

It’s an excellent fit for our times, even though it was written almost 30 years ago by one of my favorites, Leonard Cohen.

I hope you will like a listen. Google Leonard Cohen Democracy and YouTube, and there you will find a video.

My favorite stanza in Cohen’s “Democracy” is —

Sail on, sail on,
Oh mighty Ship of State,
To the shores of need,
Past the reefs of greed,
Through the squalls of hate,
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

You might want to look up all the lyrics, give them some thought, let them sink in.

Many people love Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Even though I am not sure what all those lyrics in that one are about, I cannot resist singing along with the chorus.

Cohen’s version of Irving Berlin's classic and most romantic song “Always” is a favorite of mine, too. We attended a wedding where it was the dance for the bride and groom. I think it was supposed to be the original version which I am pretty sure was a generational wedding tradition for the family. I wonder what the grandparents thought when the DJ played Cohen’s version with these lyrics:

Days may not be fair, always,
Yeah, but that’s when I’ll be there, always,
Not for just a second or a minute or an hour,
Not for just a weekend and a shakedown in the shower,
Not for just the summer and the winter going sour,
But always, always, always. . .

If you have a little time this morning, maybe spend a few minutes with Leonard Cohen on You Tube.

Happy 2021.

Boomer

I also love Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Whatever he meant by the song, praising God is always wonderful. I almost sense His presence in the song. So inspiring. I heard it played at the big synagogue in Budapest.

I like this one much better. It's much more positive and uplifting. In some areas of the UK and Europe, "You'll Never Walk Alone" became the anthem of support for medical staff, first responders, and those in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rest in peace Gerry Marsden on your final trip across the Mersey.

Yes we are all a little better for having shared the world with the great great Leonard Cohen.
