I discovered Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole on my first trip to Hawaii. The pure, haunting sound of his voice is so powerful and soulful.

Wow!
So surprised to note that your tastes go all the distance of the music genre. I thought I was the rarity but how wrong I was. I do agree with your posts re Rap but my son says the good ones are poetry. Hmmm.. Does that mean we should compare with Dylan and Hank Williams Sr? I know one post mentioned Lady Gaga. Until I heard her voice, I thought she was just an attention getter. I also heard her interview on I believe 60 Minutes. She does have a head on her shoulder. Maybe she is better than Madonna? Also, who was that 27 year old singer who overdosed recently? If she never overdosed, I would never heard her voice. Thought she was pretty good. I recently heard on PBS a Russian tenor I never heard before. His name was Nikolai Baskov. He is very good. Don't know whether he is at the Met or La Scala or he is a concert artist like Andre Bocelli. I remember Mario Frangullis coming on to the scene with PBS but he disappeared from the U.S. very quickly. Thought he was much better than Josh Raban.

Amy Winehouse is the singer who overdosed.

In today's post
In today's post under TOTV, Apple I-pad and Pandora, glgene posted how to download Pandora radio. I've not heard of this free Apps until this posting. Now I'm listening to music of my taste as I brouse or post on TOTV. For Music lover's, this is a godsend. If you too have not heard of this apps and have either iPhone or I-pad, I highly recommend it.

favorites
Il Divo is my favorite group of all time. I listen to their music for hours and hours and never tire of it. Also liked the Three Tenors.
Like Anne Murray, Mark Anthony, Josh Groban, Susan Boyle, Charlotte Church. Has anyone heard of Basia? |
Pandora
No, who is Basia? Is he or she in the same arena as your favourites?
For the person that introduced me to Pandora, thank you again. As I type this reply, I'm listening to Pat Boone Radio. I started with Easy Listening Radio and now I have Elvis Presley Radio, John Coltrane Radio, Muddy Watter, Country Classics, Anne Murray, Julie London, Julio iglesius. I put in Charles Aznabour but I got Classic Composer Radio such as Puccini, Brahms, etc. Very Intersting but it's o.k. I have no idea what I did but I like those music also anyway.:) |

Apaka
Yes, Apaka is great. I have a couple of LPs and CDs. I like his voice better than that of Don Ho. One of the post mentioned ZI and he is on Pandora's Easy Listening Radio. I didn't know about him until the post here. He has an interesting voice. Not pretty but captures one's heart somehow.

Music was a big part of my life since early 1964. There will never be another band like The Beatles, The Four Seasons were underated and Bob Gaudio was a terrific songwriter perfect for Frankie Vali's singing range. Later on Rod Stewart and The Eagles.
As I grew older groups like The Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Hendrix, The Doors and Iron Butterfly faded away from my liking. I guess I mellowed in old age. |
Hi Tom
Wow, my era of music ends at 60s so Beatles, Eagles and perhaps The Doors, I can dig but after that I am getting lost. I tried to keep up with my son growing up so watched American Music Awards and Grammy but sometimes it was hard to listen. I liked Eurythmics and Annie Lenox. I should learn more about hard rocks from you. Hendrix, wow! We were taken to "Rod Stewart" show at Savannah Theater and it was fun but don't think I'll buy his CD. Are you a fan of Grateful Dead?:icon_wink:

Basia
Basia is a Polish singer, song writer--jazz type. Her music (muzik) is often heard as "elevator music". You can hear a sample on her web site. Two of her CDs are Time and Tide and The Sweetest Illusion, my favorite.

Basia and Chuck Berry
I hear you about Chuck Berry but Rock Around the Clock was the Anthem of that era. Blackboard Jungle was a shock but I did get duck tail hair style, zoot suit black pants and used black jacket and drove on a rickety motorcycle. Remember Jimmy Dean and Brando? That was an era and Bill Haley started it though I agree it was basically a one hit wonder. Chuck Berry had more hits.
Re Basia, will definitely listen to her. I love songs in foreign language even though one can't understand the words. Love song is a love song. There is a Filipino singer Claire de la Fuentes who sings in Tagalog. She has a beautiful voice. I also like foreign singers singing popular American songs in their own languages. Tom Astor is a German country singer who sings some of Elvis's songs in German. |
The Beatles, hands down. :bigbow:

Andrea Bocelli
Oprah had Bocelli on her program and I scoured the internet looking for his music without catching his name. Finally, one of my employee's found the song that I hummed to him "Time to Say Goodbye" and I played it for hours in my office and bought it immediately on my way home. LOVE Bocelli!!!
