It's official...James lost.

My other half thinks there is something fishy here. He is a gambler and he only bid $2K on his last answer, when he usually dropped a pile on the last answer. Maybe accepted a big pay off, or his own show !!! Stay tuned.

He was in second place going into Final Jeopardy. No matter how much he bet, he could not beat Emma unless she answered incorrectly ( or did not bet enough to double him up) . His bet was enough to cover the other guy if he was correct and bet it all. And to cover Emma if she made an error and did not bet.
A proper bet.

Sorry to ruin your conspiracy theory.

A University of Chicago librarian beat him. That would be a hard job to get. Meet Emma Boettcher, the University of Chicago librarian who just beat James Holzhauer on ‘Jeopardy!’ - Chicago Tribune

I thought both James and Emma were very gracious. I think it unfortunate that it was leaked and the suspense spoiled. Cannot understand why someone felt the need to leak.

Anyway, congratulations to James. He sure made it fun.

Since the inevitable did happen the show itself probably planted the leak. One might guess that last night's viewing audience was most likely the largest of the series.

abc7chicago.com - ABC7 WLS Chicago and Chicago News

I recall that they showed Jeopardy at 3:30 PM weekdays in Chicagoland.

VILLAGERBB 06-04-2019 12:22 PM

Anyone else think he intentionally lost?

HIgolfers 06-04-2019 12:26 PM

Yup Birdie Dreamer is correct- James explained his betting rationale in an interview.

Well, here's James' comment for those who think...he may have lost on purpose.

The most frequent explanation? The pro gambler had said his young daughter was anxiously awaiting his return, so he wanted to get home earlier.

That is funny. We will be seeing a lot of James on various Jeopardy Tournaments. And he is one of the more likable Jeopardy champions.

Topspinmo 06-07-2019 08:38 AM

Luck finely ran out with double jeopardy questions. He got the first one right off the bat , so no doubling up and Emma got the last two basilly wiping him out of leaders chance. Emma had to miss the final answer to loose, she didn’t, he didn’t escape this time. He did have couple close matches and won them. Not to worry he should be back for tournament of champions.. if he don’t triple up on his winnings and figure it not worth his time? He also answered more questions that Emma but couldn’t catch her.

yes, this household thinks he either took a buy out or has something bigger waiting in the wings for him. No doubt he was/is absolutely brilliant, what an incredible mind and memory. What I wouldn't give for just some of that recall. :)

I'm a little annoyed at Alex. He made some unnecessary skeptical remarks at the beginning on the show after James lost. It just felt a bit disrespectful to Emma.
Ok, so now we know she only lasted two more shows, but still.
Not to be disrespectful to Alex but I think it's time for a new host. I saw him in a current interview, he sounded hopeful but didn't look so good. Hope the show runner is actively thinking about a new host.

He looked good in last night's To Tell the Truth. But I see that was from 2018.
