We are doing a road trip to N.E. in late July and plan on visiting Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard and would like some ideas on which hotels/town to make as my base camp while visiting Martha's vineyard and Providence town.
We want to visit MV for the day so where should we take the ferry from and what should we see when we get there. Thinking of taking a tour and having lunch in Oak Bluffs.

The outer cape, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown, have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Provincetown, incidentally, is where the Pilgrims landed—not that Plymouth Rock nonsense. Provincetown also has wonderful restaurants like The Mews, The Red Inn, and Front Street, to name just a few.


In general, the cape is VERY expensive. The Brass Key is lovely. The Provincetown Inn is less expensive, if in need of renovation. Check out Provincetown.com for more.

Try taking the ferry from Woods Hole near Falmouth. That area of the Cape is less congested and if you want to swim, the water is warmer on that side.

Hotels, bed and breakfasts are plentiful and less expensive, more charming on that side also.

If you are bikers, bring them on the ferry with you and take the bike path from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown. If you want to stay in Edgartown, the Victorian Inn there is lovely.

Travel route 6A instead of route 28. Lot less congestion and the old cape feel. Barnstable Tavern is on 6A and is nice. Whale watch tours just around the corner from there.

like March in TV. Go visit Maine last of July
(Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Oqunquit playhouse, tour Portland Harbor, maybe
Bar Harbor National Park-largest in the East) then visit Cape in August or even Sept less traffic better rates. As was mentioned take your bikes or rent, visit Cape Cod Rail trail (26 miles) or Shinny Sea bikeway (very scenic along the
ocean) then do the Vineyard/Nantucket via the ferry with your bike (very cheap with a bike). Just one caution if you go in July to the Cape make sure you have reservations, tough to find something decent at the last minute. The Cape is a very unique, special place. I like W. Yarmouth as a base, it is busy in July but you can travel quickly in the morning. Also unlike FL beaches all town beaches charge 8-10 dollars for parking??Good Luck.

The cape is beautiful in the summer, you will love it. But be aware, the first full weekend of August is when the Pan Mass Challenge takes place on the cape. The Bourne area gets clogged up on Saturday, and the rest of the cape gets it on Sunday. Literally thousands of bicycle riders on the road. It is the main fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Last year, over $50 million was raised. Not a typo, $50 million. Thousands of riders and volunteers all up and down the cape. Very busy weekend.

Having been to The Cape, MV, Nantucket several times, I can say it is crowded in July and August and impossible Labor Day. In fact on weekends, traffic is impossible from cities and then back home in the cities.

Book the Cape Cod Dinner Train. You must book accommodations and excursions now. You're going during the high peak season. Try trip advisor and look at travelers opinions.

I went all those at always liked staying in west Dennis you’ll love it but book early it packed up there during those months

Take the Islander Queen from Falmouth out to MV, Falmouth Fish Market has fresh seafood meals for takout down to the beach or village green for lunch.
