Default Anyone for a Monte Cristo?

Remember the Monte Cristo sandwich? It's essentially a sandwich of ham, turkey and Swiss cheese. Many restaurants that serve it dip the sandwich in beaten eggs, and then fry it on both sides, like French toast.

However, in the 70s (remember those?), in Copley Square in Boston there was a great restaurant named Ken's. It was popular after the bars closed at 2:00 a.m. If I recall, they were open until 4:00 a.m, but I digress. Ken's treatment was to put toothpicks into the sandwich to hold it together, then dip in eggs, then flour, then DEEP fry it until golden and melty. Serve with jam or maple syrup. I'd love to have one of those again.

Ken's servers demanded a raise and threatened a strike. Ken told if they went on strike he would close the restaurant. They did; he did. Pity. I was a super place to eat with a HUGE menu.

I haven't tried it yet but one of my neighbors that went to lunch at Demshar's says it was the best Monte Christo she ever had. Must get there ourselves because husband loves them.
It was on the Cane Garden menu not anymore.

Best one I ever had was in the dining room of the Ben Franklin hotel at 8th and Chestnut in Philadelphia. That hotel has been closed so long no one will probably remember it was ever open. Can't say that I've seen one on the menu in the last 30 years in either Philadelphia or Cincinnati and have not eaten any in that period either, although some of the good French restaurants serve up some similar sandwiches.

The sandwich can be made in a airfryer. One would not know it wasn't fried

Stage Door Delicatessen, right next door to the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan.

Have eaten there many times and have NEVER had anything that wasn't mouth watering delicious.

I love Monte Cristos. I got hooked on them at the Las Vegas Flamingo many years ago. They had it in their all night coffee shop.
I also love a yummy Croque Monsieur. Honest John's had one that I ordered quite often.
