Default Who likes creamed herring in a jar with sweet onions.

We had it for good luck on New Years day.

You like it? Or do you like pickled herring without cream?

I don't like pickled herring but I really like creamed herring and forget to buy it at the fish counter in it's little jar.

I like the pickled kind, but I prefer the type that is not in wine sauce. The wine sauce is too sweet, but I have not been able to find any pickled herring in The Villages that doesn't use wine sauce.

Oh now you are talking my language!

But Brooklyn Bagels on 466 and a jar of CREAMED herring will have to do. I haven't tried to find Lox yet but maybe next week for a nice breakfast.

'Creamed herring" is a misnomer. The fish hasn't been creamed. It IS pickled herring, filleted and cut into "bits" and served in a sour cream sauce with onions. So, you do like pickled herring, since that's exactly what you're eating. You like it served in the sour cream sauce. I do too. I get it from the supermarket a few times every year as a treat.

As for the belly lox - I don't know why it's so hard to find now! I grew up on the stuff. After a thorough google search, I've learned something new: what we know as "Nova" isn't lox at all. Lox, apparently, is a specific preparation of salmon, cured in a sugar-salt rub. Nova is cold-smoked salmon.

What I have also learned, for what it's worth, is that Breugger's Bagels smoked salmon tastes more salty than typical Nova salmon, and it's especially delicious on a toasted garlic bread with cream cheese, capers, and raw red onions.
