Default 10 Day Limit on mail pickup??

Here in Hemingway, there's a new posting at the mailbox. Says if you don't pick up your mail in 10 days, it goes to Lady Lake. Another 10 and it goes back to the sender. 90 days and you lose your mailbox.

Exception is if you use mail forwarding or hold mail (hold only good for 30 days). Any other neighborhoods see this now? Just wondering if we're special.

From what I understand, that's always been the policy in TV, so I guess it's nice to actually see it in black and white. Didn't notice anything at my mailbox, but will check for the notice tomorrow.

Generally speaking your mail box won't hold more than 10 days worth of mail. It becomes harder for the carrier to do his/her job trying to stuff more mail into your box. This may or may not be due to all of the ads you receive, but the carrier is not allowed to not deliver these ads. If it is addressed to your address it must be delivered. If your going to be away more than 3 to 4 days then place a vacation hold on your mail and have it delivered when you returned. If your going to be gone more than 30 days on a vacation, then contact your postmaster and ask to have it for more than 30 days. Other wise you can have your mail temporarily forwarded or you can use the premium forwarding service. If your mail is brought back to the post office and is not picked up within 10 days then the USPS is obligated to return the mail to sender. This is what the senders want.

We always turn in a Mail Hold when we are gone for a week or more. Have been out of town for two weeks and all the mail is "stuffed" in box when we get back. I guess they put as much in as they can and if it gets full then they put it in the overflow boxes and leave a key in your mailbox. I wish they would hold it and not stuff it in the box as some things shouldn't be folded, etc.

sandybill2, You can have the mailed held at the post office and you can pick it up when you return. There are two boxes you can check. One to deliver on a certain date and the other is to hold at post office until you pick it up ( 30 day max.)

My neighbor and I had a deal where we pick up each others mail and hold it until we return.

Truthfully, yes it is posted. BUT, as most of you know presently till this summer we are just down on the weekends. Generally 2 a month right now, and several times we have gone way over the 10 day limit and our mail has been fine. Now, before some say ok, but you don't get much. We get all our FL delivered to TV, plus we have moved our college mailings and mag subscriptions, etc already so we do get a bit! All we still get in Alabama are our AL bills.

We were just out of town for over a week---I checked the box " will pick up on return"-- since I did not know when we would be back---still "stuffed" in my box. I think I just need to talk to the postal station worker next time.

This may not be ethical but here's how we get the mail stopped on time, delivered on time, held the right amount of time etc.
An occasional thank you card with a $20 bill works wonders. I know it's their job to deliver the mail but a simple expression of appreciation makes them remember who you are. I also always talk with the mail carrier or mail station worker before I leave and give them a note as to how to handle the mail, hold, forward or whatever.

A christmas card with a 20.00 in it also helps to be remembered by the postal person. Works for us, try it.

We have a lovely guy who takes care of our mail and when we get oversized packages he delivers them to our door. We appreciate his service and know that he doesn't get big bucks for his work. A smile and some cash go a long way in showing appreciation.
